Wahoo Magic, Marlin and Sailfish Too, Everything is Ready and Waiting for You

Welcome to the New Year Amigos! As we move into winter the fishing does change here a little, but not today. We are still seeing Marlin and Sailfish at El Banco, Wahoo at Corbeteña, Jack Crevalls have invaded the bay and the Marietta Islands are still hot with action. Right now the vacationing angler or visitor alike can enjoy our World famous fishing grounds and not have to break the bank doing so. Now if you’re looking for larger fish, longer durations will naturally be necessary for larger fish. But if you’re looking for action, this is the place to be!

El Banco has been hot one day, cold the next and the action is sparse. The automatic Yellowfin of last week have turned into smaller and less reliable bite this week and very few charter boats have been heading out this direction. Those who did risk it came back in with Sailfish in the 65 inch range, Marlin in the 275 lb range, Dorado in the 40 lb range and of course the mixed bag of Snapper, Rainbow runners, and the possible Wahoo (slightly possible). For the money, until things come to a boil again at El Banco, other places may be a better choice for your fuel dollar.

The other deep, blue water location, Corbeteña is still working like a machine. As of when this article was written Wahoo were all over the Rock. Most that go out fishing are not prepared for Wahoo. You need wire leaders, troll faster than normal and have cable rigged lures! With Wahoo, the way they attack bait, they tear it up with their razor sharp teeth, basically bite the fish in half, then come back and eat the pieces. So if you want to boat Wahoo, an incidental catch by the way, you better be rigged up for it, or if you do boat one, it’s pure luck! Cubera Snapper, Sailfish, even Striped Marlin are waiting for you at this very moment. For the fuel dollar, I always like this location. Also, don´t be afraid to venture out a little from the rock. Use your sounder and check out the bottom, anywhere you find structure is a prime location for bottom fishing! So keep an open mind. Other than that, Lures or pink, yellow and combinations color lures of purple, green, pink etc are all working well. Better actually this past week than live bait, so again keep an open mind and try what comes to mind!

The Islands, Marietta’s to be exact are still producing well, but not like last week. Dorado aka Mahi Mahi are in the area, but with the cooler water at the islands you better head out there and get what you can before they leave from the coldest of winter months. Dorado is a warm water loving species, so they head for warmer waters come mid January.

The areas around Nuevo Vallarta have been taken over by large Sierra Mackerals and Jack Crevalls. I sent clients out in four hours and came back with tired arms and a bunch of gamefish. This was a four hour day and it goes to show you can have great action in the bay. Now you won’t find Moby dick on the end of your line, but you can always tell a fish story! Remember the first story never wins!

Remember as the winter season descends upon us, the Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta will shirt a little when it comes to species, but the size of the species available in and out of the bay will more than likely be under 100 lbs. marlin of course will be larger as some Sailfish will, but as a whole, the fish will range between 20 and 100 lbs with Marlin naturally being larger. With our new panga, you can hit a four hour trip for up to three people for $175.00 usd. It´s a loss leader, but it’s a nice boat, well equipped and nice looking with a little more shade than the average panga. So if you’re looking for the best deal in the Marina, Master Baiter’s in Marina Vallarta is your best option when it comes to fishing in Vallarta!
