Right Now Size Matters, of Your Wallet That is, Fuel for Fish, Fair Trade

As we come into Christmas Week, the town is abuzz with Christmas Spirit, people arriving in packed airplanes, Yes, Christmas in Vallarta is almost here. Besides the gift of wonderful weather and drinkable water, Puerto Vallarta Sportfishing offers anglers from all over the world a once in a life time experience. Our world famous fishing grounds are stacked with Yellowfin Tuna, Marlin, Dorado, Sailfish and more, right here, right now. So Merry Christmas to those of you lucky enough to head out and catch a finned fantasy!

Decisions, Decisions, making them can be a problem when there are several choices in front of you. If you have the fuel dollar, Corbeteña has been the place to be. With plentiful bait, comfortable water temperatures and blue water, the Rock has been coming through. With the Krill shrimp and tiny Sardines either eaten or gone, Bonito have taken their place. Larger Bonito to forty pounds and smaller Bullet Bonito that are about nine inches long. Both fit well on the Yellowfin Tuna Menu which are still running in the 30 to 70 kilo range or 60 to 160 is pounds. Live bait is king and the bite is in the afternoon around 3:00 P.M. so plan for a later day if you can. Kites are working, but not just for Yellowfin, Striped Marlin and Sailfish are taking these surface baits and will take cast bait if presented. Nothing worse than hitting a Sailfish in the head with bait and ignoring it. Yelling at Sailfish at this point is justified and acceptable…Now Striped Marlin are running in the 300 lb range and are jumping intermittently along with Sailfish. Again, jump all day, eat all afternoon.. Pargo or Cubera Snapper have been also taking the baits presented and hitting some lures of black and purple, worth a try.

El Banco is not producing steadily like we’ve all come to expect from The Bank. Water is a swirling mess of hot and cold water which is keeping the Yellowfin out of the area. Sailfish, Striped Marlin, larger Dorado, Rainbow Runners and more are running here, but why spend the money on fuel. Corbeteña is a better choice at the moment.

Marietta Islands, El Morro and points north of Punta Mita are all working well for Sailfish, Dorado, Jack Crevalls, Bonito, Snapper and lots more to choose from. Only have 8 hrs you can get away from the wife while she has her back waxed, the Marietta Islands is the place to be. El Morro with the crazy currents are showing a lot of upwelling and that brings fish as well. Don´t forget El Morro. Punta Mita and north are Sailfish City, but you may have to head to areas north of San Pancho or San Francisco in English. If you’re in the area, why not give it a shot. If coming back from Corbeteña, give yourself some light tackle action.
Inside the bay, the Whales and the Tourist have returned. Down near los Arcos where the tour ships do the snorkeling and Booze Cruises, the Bonito are just boiling off the rocks. Farther down you’ll find Dorado around Yelapa. Head five miles out and you may even get a smaller Sailfish. With the fishing, snorkeling and Whale watching opportunities a super pang for $225.00 for six hours is the cheapest boat in Marina Vallarta and I have it exclusively. Four hours is $175.00 and it has a built in fish finder, gps, etc. Not common on super pangas.
