Big Game Fishing Returns to Puerto Vallarta

For the last several months we´ve been in something like a holding pattern, waiting for the water temperatures and Big Game Fishing to return to our world famous fishing grounds. If you were using Yellowfin Tuna as your calendar this year, you´d think it was summer if you here. This could be an early season tease, but with all the out of season Yellowfin Tuna at the Tres Maria Islands for the last few months, I´m a little inclined to call this an indicator. Presently just 11 miles north of the high spots, Yellowfin Tuna were boated just the other day weighing in at 180 lbs. This is June folks, early for Yellowfin of this size. Marlin, Sailfish, and Rainbow runners are still around the high spots. In a time where your fuel dollar is precious, now would be a good time to shake the piggy bank.

Corbeteña hasn´t been left out of the action when it comes to Yellowfin Tuna, although they´ve been running between 40 to 75 lbs. But this could change any minute and explode or die, that´s fishing. One nice thing about Corbeteña is the area is diverse in underwater conditions. This means with the volcanic structure there and deep channels, Snapper, Rainbow runners, Amber Jacks and more are available to the open minded angler. Sailfish, Marlin, Mahi Mahi and Jack Crevalls are waiting for you now.

Off the point of Punta Mita, Rooster fish are setting up house around the point before Sayulita. This is a normal hang out for these fish and we´ll be talking more about this as the season goes on. Mahi Mahi at the buoys have been running larger, between 25 and 40 lbs. Sailfish are moving in like ants twenty miles north of the point. So if you want a shorter day, the fishing is still going to paste a smile on your face.

Unless you were specifically looking for Yellowfin Tuna last year, Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta last year was excellent, but the Yellowfin never really showed up in the numbers we´re used to seeing. With unusually large Yellowfin outside of the bank this early in the season combined with what has been happening at the Tres Maria Prison Islands, I think that this season will be made to order for the serious Yellowfin Hunter! Fewer visitors, means fewer charter boats at the fishing grounds. Instead of chashing fish down, this will help keep fish on the surface where baits are more easily seen due to less noise and congestion. The Fishing has improved drastically now and if you want to know what it used to be like at the PV fishing grounds, now would be a chance to experience this first hand! There are some crazy cheap deals out there for PV, take advantage of the lull and Catch a finned fantasy for your own.

For those interested in going fishing, Master Baiter’s is giving everyone who charters a boat at this time (company boats only in Marina Vallarta) free hour fishing with every charter (except 12 hr charters). We are also throwing in a free T-shirt to who ever catches the biggest fish! That’s about a $125.00 usd value. So there you go, what’s stopping you now?

That’s about it for now, until next week, don’t forget to kiss your fish!
