July Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta Right on Track, Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna!

Now that we´re moving into late July, the weather services have informed the general public that we are either in or entering another El Nino Year. The effects of this normal weather condition can be mild to severe and will affect the weather of the whole world, not just the Americas. If you would like to be better informed on the subject you can visit the NOAA Site at: http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/tao/elnino/el-nino-story.html

Moving on we´ve seen water Temperatures hover in the cooler ranges of normal lately and may continue, who knows. The interesting news is the water temperatures in the fishing grounds closer in to shore are the productive areas to be. This means that if you´re heading out, hitting the farther out areas like Corbeteña or El Banco would be your ¨ ¨biggest bang¨ for your Fuel Dollar this week. But, like always this can change in a second so keep your ears open or call me for the latest conditions in and around the bay. With all the Tuna, Marlin and Sailfish sighted at these locations they will come around sooner than later. Mahi in these spots have been larger than expected in the 50 lb range, but they are usually out from the Rock or High Spots, so you´ll have to use your head and your lucky rabbit’s foot!

El Morro and the Marietta’s are still ¨on again, off again¨ when this article was written. Still lots of bait in the area making it hard to get any of them interest in the baits being presented. But again, this can not last forever and as the bait thins out, the tables will tilt in the other direction. Rooster fish, Mahi Mahi and or course Needle fish and Jack Crevalls will keep your interest!

Yet again this week, the story is all about inside the bay. The relatively warm water temperatures are keeping bait and larger species in close to the short line. If you´re outside the bay, you have a fair chance of hooking into a Marlin or Sailfish. Most likely you´ll be getting hits from Dorado and Rooster fish at the point of Punta Mita in the large rocks or as the locals call them, islands. For those interested in getting game fish and not spending the day searching for Moby Dick, then this would probably be your best option. Six to eight hour trips are where the fish are at, so why throw your money away.

Last week the Navy was inspecting charter boats and tour boats alike for proof of insurance. If the boat you were on did not have it, then you had an argument on the boat. Not with the Navy, the captain has that problem. No rather with the clients who wanted their money back and it turned into a Giant Argument. That is one way these charter boats sell cheap trips. There are other ways out there that you´d never know, but always be sure you are on safe boats with insurance. On these boats you may think you´re paying for safe, so ask for their proof of insurance. If they can´t produce it ¨soon¨ don´t be stupid. Once they start cutting corners, there is no end to it…..

One area that is ignored is the south end of the bay. For some reason there is very little interest in the Marina Vallarta Captains in this area. But the area around El Faro at the Cabo Correntes point is a hot spot that should be receiving more attention. Sailfish in this area is not unusual and there are times when Black Marlin have been boated there as well. The area is on the Bay Fringe so this can be a mixed bag on any given day. Snappers, Mahi, Skip Jack Tuna, Mackerals, and the list goes on….. Worth a try if you have your own boat or an adventurous captain with some ¨information¨…..

The rains are still a blessing here in PV, so if it´s raining in the morning, this is a good thing amigo. Fish get excited and come to the surface, exactly what we would like. With all the logs and dead head stumps etc, there are lots of spots with opportunity if you know what to look for. Casting a goggle eye live bait around a stump or log in the bay can pay golden dividends in the form of Mahi Mahi for the evening dinner table!

As we get ready to move into August, the Yellowfin Tuna  and Black Marlin will continue to become more and more plentiful. With El Nino becoming an issue that has to be dealt with the season could be interesting at the very least. We´ll keep our fingers crossed, you do the same…..
