Mahi Mania in La Bahia, The Great Bait Invasion!

Well, this week it was announced that El Nino is showing it´s ugly face again and we all know what that means. More upside down fishing, warm to hot water temperatures and unpredictable conditions. Nothing new, right? I don´t know if this is good news or bad news for fishing in Puerto Vallarta. One thing for sure, the fish are out at the fishing grounds now!

This week we´ve seen overly abundant bait in the water, mostly flying fish, they´re a bit of a problem really! Too much bait can be a problem since you can´t offer anything to these fish they could be interested in. So the only thing you´ll be able to do is your best to mimic them. So lures are a strong weapon to have in your bag of tricks. Silver and purple are good color combinations to try if trolling fast, skipping the lure or bait on the surface of the water might do the trick, worth a try. Make sure you have a down rigger with you. Warm water temperatures will drive Yellowfin down to water temperatures that are more comfortable to them. The bait situation has been like this for more than a week now so they should start thinning out. Soon the professionals will be writing this all up in the November fishing publications.

Corbeteña and El Banco have been disappointing this week when it comes to Yellowfin. For a few days at El Banco, it was a Yellowfin Tuna Ghost Town. Jigging, kites, trolling, nothing there to strike! Now Sailfish are all over the place. There is a shot at boating a Sailfish, but you´ll have to work for it amigos. There have been some really large Dorado outside of these locations, so if you´ve got the fuel, keep your eyes peeled for boils. Lots of Marlin sightings, no takers though.

The Marietta Islands and just north of Punta Mita have been showing signs of life with midsized Mahi Mahi in the 25 to 40 lb range. Sailfish are taking bait in these areas, so this could be an indication of abundant food diminishing. This should only get better as the week progresses, cross your fingers.

The bay lately has been surprising productive. Snappers in the beach areas with rocks, Dorado at the trash lines, with Snook at the river mouths and Jack Crevalls springing up again, the bay has a fair amount of bang for your buck. Four hour days in the bay are affordable and productive. I´m running an extra hour with every charter short of 12 hrs. So you pay for four, get five. How can you beat that if your want a short day and lots of fish!

The bottom line this week is the usual places are still pretty scarce when it comes to boats. You can still essentially have the fishing grounds to yourself and again, this is not a condition that will last for long. If you can, I would suggest getting out there and enjoying uncrowned conditions.

The last few weeks I´ve been writing about how many, many fishing boats that book charters are not insured nor have legal operating papers. Well this past week the Navy clamped down and started checking individual boats for their documentation. If you did not have it, you were turned around and given a citation. Several boats have been stopped from doing business and the bargain hunting angler who put down his money was hard pressed to get a refund. This does freak the Anglers out to have a navy boat come up to you and start asking for papers. Especially since they have guns and look pretty darn intimidating. But this is for the good of us all and will only keep things safe for the vacationing enthusiast. Many people who come to Puerto Vallarta may have one chance in their lifetime to catch a finned fantasy. Saving a few dollars with a friend of a friends, friend can ultimately kill that fantasy before you get out of the marina. Be sure you are using someone who is looking out for your interest, not just theirs….. We would call that customer service, or just getting what you paid for!
