Rooster City at the Islands!

Puerto Vallarta is still in the middle of Peak Season, evident from all the Mexican Nationals that come to our emerald coast every year about this time. Along with Semana Santa, as it’s called here, comes changes in currents and seasons as you might expect. We’re still in the winter fishing mode, but there are signs of warming conditions as the days are longer and the fishing will soon start warming up.

When it comes to Sport Fishing in Puerto Vallarta, anyone who’s been around a short while knows that we go through a period of time every year when every day is a challenge when it comes to fishing. Some days the fish are practically jumping into the boat. Others, it’s as if they’re playing with your mind. Nothing is worse than putting clients on fish, and the fish couldn’t be less interested in the baits being offered. Welcome to the seasonal transition period. Currents changing direction, days with up welled up sediment making for dirty water conditions, then there are days you could cast your key chain at them and you could boat a real trophy… go figure.

Starting at the outside edges of our world famous Puerto Vallarta fishing grounds, El Banco is still alive with action, but with the tourist in town, most people are opting for shorter trips. Those hitting this outside location are finding Yellowfin Tuna in the 60 lb range (great for this time of the year), Blue and Striped Marlin and of Mahi Mahi. You may need a five or six mile radius from the high spots. Two weeks ago if you wanted to see these species you were being chased away from the Tres Marias (aka Prison Islands). There are those who will risk everything for a fish and we all feel sorry for them when there’s a “problem”. But you can’t protect people from themselves.

Very, very few boats heading out to Corbetena for the last few weeks. With other areas closer in, it’s a better bang for the budget conscience anglers buck. Last I heard of Corbetena the Long Liners had surrounded the rock. The sports fisherman on charter boats risk wrapping the props up in these lines, which I’m sure you could imagine what an issue that would be. Remember, there is no coast guard here to save your butt. So keep this in mind.

The Marietta Islands and El Morro areas are the real story this week. Rooster fish, Jack Crevalls, Torros, Snappers and other assorted species have been saving the day for the local boys. Again with the vacation budgets being a little smaller this year, these areas are perfect. Eight hour trips will put you in the thick of things. But remember, they may not like what you have to offer. The boats that spend the extra time and fuel looking for fish will always come in with fish. If you’re using a company that hits one spot and that’s all you’re going to see, don’t go fishing with them again and warn your friends about them. Beware of “bargain charters”… there is nothing cheap about fishing, so keep your wits about you amigos and come back happy.

The buoys at Sayulita are still Mahi Mahi central. Remember the buoys are owned by the commercial fisherman and they may get a little upset at you if you you’re there. In fact it’s pretty common for these guys to run over your lines. The Mahi are still running anywhere from small to nice sized, it just depends on what you come across. Farther north of this area you’ll still see sailfish and blue marlin, but it’s a ten to twelve hour day. If you’re going to put in the distance, El Banco is a better choice for the time being.

The Rocks just off the point of Punta Mita have been a heaven for Rooster fish and I don’t mean small ones either. I’ve had clients for the last few weeks coming in with surprisingly large Roosters in the 40 to 60 inch range. If you’ve never had the chance to boat one of these beauties, they’re amazing strong for their size and you’ll think you’ve got a much bigger fish on than what it turns out to be!

This week I’m proud to announce I’ve just updated my web page and I think you’ll find it impressive. Go to www.MasterBaiters.com.mx to check it out. I’ll be posting more and more videos. We still have the fishing reports that are real time on Mondays, still photos and tons of other useful information. I have luxury yachts and party boats available now as well! Soon I’ll have a facebook site, so check us out! Things are changing as Master Baiter’s ® grows with Puerto Vallarta.

I guess that’s about it for this week, until next time, don’t forget to kiss your fish!
