Perfect Weather, Great Fishing, The Magic Season in Puerto Vallarta!
Welcome to the best days of High Season in Puerto Vallarta. Outside my front door I have been seeing a strange and wonderful site as late, PEOPLE! Nationals and Estranos (foreigners) alike are back for High Season. Hopefully the dog days of last years bad economy are coming to an end. Mexico, Puerto Vallarta in this case has suffered through the worst year of it’s tourism and business life ever. Things are getting better by the day for local businesses and restaurants. Business is still down, but what we are seeing now is a blessing we won’t complain about. And like tourism, the fish are changing over to winter species as we begin to see cooler and cooler water temperatures like you would expect at this time of the year. The only non- available species no longer in Puerto Vallarta Sportfishing grounds would be Black Marlin and larger Yellowfin Tuna. Skip Jack and Football Yellowfin Tunas will be here forever (we hope). Sol there are plenty of reasons to be on the water these days besides watching whales.
Corbeteña this week is still producing like a machine with some nice sized Yellowfin Tuna as long as you’re patient, they’re out there. They can be anywhere in size now that the water currents are changing, but last week boating a 80 lb Yellowfin was easy! Sailfish in the 80 inch range, Cubera Snapper in the 50 lb range, Dorado in the 45 lb range and of course Striped Marlin in the 250 to 400 lb range. So the fishing is great, but like always, fishing can drive you nutz, so have some patience and a little fun out there.
For all of you that like Rooster Fish(ing) you’re in luck. Just around the corner of Punta Mita the Rooster fish population has exploded for some and are good size. Anywhere from 30 to 55 lbs can be expected closer in, but not on the reefs up there. Remember a shinny bait will always get their attention, so a cheap little diamond jig still works, no matter how long they´ve been around. Sailfish and Dorado are in the area also, but you´ll need to head out from ten to twenty miles to find them. There is a very good chance you´ll see Striped or Blue Marlin the area as well. Conditions normally last into spring this way and we think that is great and convenient! You should plan on a ten hour day, but eight will get you there with less time with your line in the water! Remember to ask that question when chartering a boat out there, boat rides are cheap and long, beware!
The Marietta Islands are still alive with a lot of hard working action with Bonito, Sierra Mackerals and Snappers in the 20 to 35 lb range. Sailfish are hovering around the islands but there are a hit and miss situation right now. Jack Crevalls are taking over the islands and running 30 lbs and up, they can tear your arms off on light tackle. Never a dull location, yet close enough to save a buck or two compared to further out…
Inside the bay, the Sierra Mackerals have taken over the shorelines. Rapallas, all sorts of jigs, live bait, you name it, they’ll strike it! Roballo or Sea Bass, Bonito, Needle Fish, and more are all around the bay and larger than normal with the averages for these fish in the 20 to 35 lb range, just depends. My 4 hr $175.00 usd panga for in the bay is the cheapest boat in the marina and it’s very nice. Looking for a cheap day on the water but don’t want to scrimp on quality?
Now that we are in full Seasonal Transition Mode things will be changing regarding the fishing. The larger fish are still here, but they are less abundant than they are in the summer.  As a whole, we are waiting to see how things are going to shape up for winter. But whatever happens we know this; fishing in Puerto Vallarta’s World Famous fishing grounds never gets ¨cold or slow¨. We always have fish and we always have available boat. So if you´re looking for a real fishing experience, come to Puerto Vallarta and see why we’re famous. If not, you’ll just be another year older wondering why you waited so long!
We are now selling our world famous T-Shirts online at www.MasterBaitersGear.com … We only have two designs up for the time being, but if things go well, we’ll increase the products offered.

Wahoo Magic, Marlin and Sailfish Too, Everything is Ready and Waiting for You

Welcome to the New Year Amigos! As we move into winter the fishing does change here a little, but not today. We are still seeing Marlin and Sailfish at El Banco, Wahoo at Corbeteña, Jack Crevalls have invaded the bay and the Marietta Islands are still hot with action. Right now the vacationing angler or visitor alike can enjoy our World famous fishing grounds and not have to break the bank doing so. Now if you’re looking for larger fish, longer durations will naturally be necessary for larger fish. But if you’re looking for action, this is the place to be!

El Banco has been hot one day, cold the next and the action is sparse. The automatic Yellowfin of last week have turned into smaller and less reliable bite this week and very few charter boats have been heading out this direction. Those who did risk it came back in with Sailfish in the 65 inch range, Marlin in the 275 lb range, Dorado in the 40 lb range and of course the mixed bag of Snapper, Rainbow runners, and the possible Wahoo (slightly possible). For the money, until things come to a boil again at El Banco, other places may be a better choice for your fuel dollar.

The other deep, blue water location, Corbeteña is still working like a machine. As of when this article was written Wahoo were all over the Rock. Most that go out fishing are not prepared for Wahoo. You need wire leaders, troll faster than normal and have cable rigged lures! With Wahoo, the way they attack bait, they tear it up with their razor sharp teeth, basically bite the fish in half, then come back and eat the pieces. So if you want to boat Wahoo, an incidental catch by the way, you better be rigged up for it, or if you do boat one, it’s pure luck! Cubera Snapper, Sailfish, even Striped Marlin are waiting for you at this very moment. For the fuel dollar, I always like this location. Also, don´t be afraid to venture out a little from the rock. Use your sounder and check out the bottom, anywhere you find structure is a prime location for bottom fishing! So keep an open mind. Other than that, Lures or pink, yellow and combinations color lures of purple, green, pink etc are all working well. Better actually this past week than live bait, so again keep an open mind and try what comes to mind!

The Islands, Marietta’s to be exact are still producing well, but not like last week. Dorado aka Mahi Mahi are in the area, but with the cooler water at the islands you better head out there and get what you can before they leave from the coldest of winter months. Dorado is a warm water loving species, so they head for warmer waters come mid January.

The areas around Nuevo Vallarta have been taken over by large Sierra Mackerals and Jack Crevalls. I sent clients out in four hours and came back with tired arms and a bunch of gamefish. This was a four hour day and it goes to show you can have great action in the bay. Now you won’t find Moby dick on the end of your line, but you can always tell a fish story! Remember the first story never wins!

Remember as the winter season descends upon us, the Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta will shirt a little when it comes to species, but the size of the species available in and out of the bay will more than likely be under 100 lbs. marlin of course will be larger as some Sailfish will, but as a whole, the fish will range between 20 and 100 lbs with Marlin naturally being larger. With our new panga, you can hit a four hour trip for up to three people for $175.00 usd. It´s a loss leader, but it’s a nice boat, well equipped and nice looking with a little more shade than the average panga. So if you’re looking for the best deal in the Marina, Master Baiter’s in Marina Vallarta is your best option when it comes to fishing in Vallarta!

Remember I have an online store now at: www.MasterBaitersGear.com.mx  I only have two styles for now, but if it has a decent response, I will increase the product line. Maybe get into serious tackle, stay tuned.
Until Next week, don´t for get to kiss your fish.

Marlin Magic Continues into Winter, Great Bargains Draw Tourist Back

The days continue to be warm and the nights are pleasant with light breezes and tropical surroundings. People are coming back slowly as cold weather patterns in the States nudge people into escaping for a short while. With the values at the hotels and around the city, Marina Vallarta has never been a better value. Those interested in Puerto Vallarta Sportfishing still have a chance to hook into a finned fantasy like a Marlin or Yellowfin Tuna. Sailfish, Dorado and even Wahoo are available to those with a full day to spend on the sapphire blue waters in our world famous fishing grounds. Remember ¨tomorrows have a habit of turning into ¨I should have yesterday when I could have(s) ¨.

For those who do decide to take advantage of our Big Game fishing, Corbeteña right now is the place to be. Everything is just percolating out there. With plenty of bait in the water, you’ll find birds diving into huge bait balls like Kamikazes. As you pull up to a bait ball like this, the action can be intense, and everyone has their part. As you look out over the water, you see the Yellowfin Tuna hurling themselves through the center of this boil like missiles! Then you hear the reels as they scream for attention. You get the harness on, and you’re in the game. Other Players include Blue and Striped Marlin (275 lbs), Sailfish (80 inches), Dorado (30-50 lbs), Wahoo (40 – 65 lbs), Cubera Snapper (35-65 lbs) and the list goes on. Live bait is king right now, but remember you’ll have big Yellowfin hit hoochies as well, don’ be afraid to mix things up a little. Put yourself in the picture and live a little amigos!

Marietta Islands are alive with the invasion of Jack Crevalls, Toro’s, Mackerals, Dorado, Sailfish and Needle fish to name a few. Of course this is a very flexible location and with some warm water there is always the outside chance of a Striped Marlin. It’s a great place to head out to, especially with those not willing to spend ten hours on a boat. Oh, buy the way, I have a new panga that is heading out to the Marietta Islands for $250.00 usd, two people comfortable, and three max. So there really is no reason to let the chance at some great sport fishing pass you by. Even less expensive for shorter durations. You may even see a whale out there!

The shore lines from Cabo Corrientes to Punta Mita all have potential. Lots of Spanish Mackerals have moved into the area, in the middle of the bay you’ll find Jack Crevalls. River mouths have Snook and the structure and rocky areas have snapper. Be careful though, the baby Manta Rays will eat baits bouncing off the sandy bottoms around here!

North of Punta Mita is still keeping anglers in action. Rooster fish the last couple of weeks have turned up at the Sayulita area and hopefully will hand around for a while. We were looking for these guys all summer, they had other ideas I guess. North of the point from ten to twenty five miles is one of those areas that will always guarantee results. Dorado and Sailfish are the main players here, but Striped and Blue Marlin will be in the deeper water. If you’re in the La Cruz Marina, this is a close and valid option for small dinero amigos!
Remember I have an online store now at: www.MasterBaitersGear.com.mx  I only have two styles for now, but if it has a decent response, I will increase the product line. Maybe get into serious tackle, stay tuned.

Puerto Vallarta Fishing Report - Dec 13 - 2009

Right Now Size Matters, of Your Wallet That is, Fuel for Fish, Fair Trade

As we come into Christmas Week, the town is abuzz with Christmas Spirit, people arriving in packed airplanes, Yes, Christmas in Vallarta is almost here. Besides the gift of wonderful weather and drinkable water, Puerto Vallarta Sportfishing offers anglers from all over the world a once in a life time experience. Our world famous fishing grounds are stacked with Yellowfin Tuna, Marlin, Dorado, Sailfish and more, right here, right now. So Merry Christmas to those of you lucky enough to head out and catch a finned fantasy!

Decisions, Decisions, making them can be a problem when there are several choices in front of you. If you have the fuel dollar, Corbeteña has been the place to be. With plentiful bait, comfortable water temperatures and blue water, the Rock has been coming through. With the Krill shrimp and tiny Sardines either eaten or gone, Bonito have taken their place. Larger Bonito to forty pounds and smaller Bullet Bonito that are about nine inches long. Both fit well on the Yellowfin Tuna Menu which are still running in the 30 to 70 kilo range or 60 to 160 is pounds. Live bait is king and the bite is in the afternoon around 3:00 P.M. so plan for a later day if you can. Kites are working, but not just for Yellowfin, Striped Marlin and Sailfish are taking these surface baits and will take cast bait if presented. Nothing worse than hitting a Sailfish in the head with bait and ignoring it. Yelling at Sailfish at this point is justified and acceptable…Now Striped Marlin are running in the 300 lb range and are jumping intermittently along with Sailfish. Again, jump all day, eat all afternoon.. Pargo or Cubera Snapper have been also taking the baits presented and hitting some lures of black and purple, worth a try.

El Banco is not producing steadily like we’ve all come to expect from The Bank. Water is a swirling mess of hot and cold water which is keeping the Yellowfin out of the area. Sailfish, Striped Marlin, larger Dorado, Rainbow Runners and more are running here, but why spend the money on fuel. Corbeteña is a better choice at the moment.

Marietta Islands, El Morro and points north of Punta Mita are all working well for Sailfish, Dorado, Jack Crevalls, Bonito, Snapper and lots more to choose from. Only have 8 hrs you can get away from the wife while she has her back waxed, the Marietta Islands is the place to be. El Morro with the crazy currents are showing a lot of upwelling and that brings fish as well. Don´t forget El Morro. Punta Mita and north are Sailfish City, but you may have to head to areas north of San Pancho or San Francisco in English. If you’re in the area, why not give it a shot. If coming back from Corbeteña, give yourself some light tackle action.
Inside the bay, the Whales and the Tourist have returned. Down near los Arcos where the tour ships do the snorkeling and Booze Cruises, the Bonito are just boiling off the rocks. Farther down you’ll find Dorado around Yelapa. Head five miles out and you may even get a smaller Sailfish. With the fishing, snorkeling and Whale watching opportunities a super pang for $225.00 for six hours is the cheapest boat in Marina Vallarta and I have it exclusively. Four hours is $175.00 and it has a built in fish finder, gps, etc. Not common on super pangas.

As always, you can contact me and ask me any question you may have. I´ll do my best to answer them on any subject.

Puerto Vallarta Fishing Report - Nov 29 - 2009

December 2, 2009 by admin

Right now, Fish are where you find them, Conditions / Currents Fluctuate
It seems, again, that he moment I finished my last report, everything changed, again. If you´re looking for Yellowfin Tuna this week, well you may be bald headed by now from the pure frustration of changing conditions, water temperatures and sea conditions in general. The frustrating thing is you know the fish are out there, you see them jumping and they’re in fish heaven. It all comes down to luck, skill and a well equipped boat.

I know you’ve heard me say a thousand times a cheap boat can be the most expensive thing you  spend  your vacation dollar on when you come back empty handed and others have full fish boxes. You saved money at the expense of catching that finned fantasy. Again, this week the boat with kites, a spectrum of lure colors and sizes, and fast boats that burn fuel was the secret. At El Banco, making bait has been good and bad. Some days good, other days bad. So making bait when you can is very important right now. If you know there are fish where you’re heading out to and you can’t make bait, that is frustration factor No. 1.

Those forced to use lures had fair luck. Petrileros, lures with purple or Green this week was working well. Google Eyes are a staple for bait and they were working most of the time. But those who could get Chorras or small Bonito were getting strikes. Using Kites this week were working on more than YellowfinTuna. Sailfish and Marlin were striking these suspended baits. But the inside scoop here is not the fish, but what they’ve been eating.

With the Whales returning to the area, they come here for the small bait in the water. Small guppies like fish, krill shrimp, and small fish in general, these are what whales eat and filter through their grill in their mouth called baleen. The problem is that Yellowfin will feed, Dorado also, on these baits until they can’t eat any more, then eat more! So like my friend J.J. Says, Elephants eat peanuts also. So running a planer with some hoochies or squid baits have a shot at getting you a Yellowfin in the 60 lb range at El Banco, maybe even a dorado. Those shooting for larger fish like Marlin and Sailfish, even Yellowfin will want to use larger baits and be prepared with lots of lures with plenty of color! But alas, this week At El Banco was work at best. Worth the time and effort if you arrive for the early or late bites. Otherwise other places like Corbeteña would be a better option.

Speaking of Corbeteña or the ¨Rock¨ has been very active this week. With all the current and water temperature changes Corbeteña is you most flexible destination. Sailfish, Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna, Marlin of all types, Snapper (Cubera or Pargo in Spanish) are just a few that you can almost always depend on here. Although not all of these normally happen at the same time. With Good eating Rainbow runners, green and blue runners, Amber Jacks and a host of others, you will almost always come back with something for the dinner table! So don’t let that Captain tell you they taste bad, when they’re wonderful!

There have even been some Wahoo caught off the south end of the rock trolling lures off the rock finger that extends under water there. This area is always worth the money. If you hit el Banco and nothing is happening, take your time trolling to Corbeteña, lots of hot spots between the two locations that produce tournament winning fish, but get ignored by in the box thinking captains. You don´t have to be on automatic amigos… break the pattern!

The Marietta Islands, like always is a great place for the angler short on vacation budget. If you´re on the south side of El Morro, you can always depend on catching something. With the currents and they up well there, there is always plenty of food to attract fish. Rooster fish especially love this area, so don´t forget about it and only hit the Marietta islands! The whole area this past week has been producing Sailfish to 120 inches, Dorado in the 25 lb range, even a few Striped Marlin a mile or so off the rocks towards the north. Jack Crevalls, Amber Jacks and a host of other fish call this area home and like to just ¨Hang out¨ ….

North of Punta Mita is still a great place and if you´re fourteen miles off the point at a setting of 310, you’re in the recent hot spot. Not far from El Banco, but closer to shore, you´ll find perfect conditions exist for Sailfish, Blue and Striped Marlin, Mahi if you find a log or some floating piece of something they can hang around. Still need at least ten hours, but it’s an option and we all need those!

Inside the bay, things are a little better with Dorado all over the southern end of the bay around Los Arcos to Cabo Correntes point. In fact Cabo Corrientes has had some great action if you´re lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time. But with the bite that way it has been, I could say that about all the fishing grounds this week. So keep your ears to the wind and call me for the most recent developments when it comes to conditions and catches.

Until Next week, don´t for get to kiss your fish.

Puerto Vallarta Fishing Report for Nov 15 - 2009

November 18, 2009 by admin

Party Time, Yellowfin Tuna, Marlin, Sailfish waiting for you at Corbeteña

November is considered one of the best months of the year for Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta. Water temperatures remain perfect into early January. Since we’re out of the Summer Sun Days, we have warm days and cool evening. So it’s no wonder we’re seeing the return of the vacation Angler back in Puerto Vallarta.

People aren’t the only ones back, we’re seeing the first of the season migration of Whales back in Marina Vallarta. The bay at this time of the year becomes a heaven for all sorts of Sea Life. Part of that sea life is in regards to the Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta’s World famous fishing grounds. Yellowfin Tuna to be exact, which have been less than available this whole season. Now, if you´re in the Corbeteña area or El Banco (the Bank in English) you were picking off Yellowfin from 80 to 175 lbs. mostly, but many were in the 200 lb range. Black Marlin (300 to 500 lbs) are also at these usual locations in ever increasing numbers. Sailfish at this time of the year just take over. Corbeteña is no stranger to Sailfish and very many have been boated in the 100 inch range and anywhere from 75 to 100 lbs. If you are lucky enough to find bait at your chosen location, the Bonito are running really large. Almost too large for Tuna Tubes. The theory that big bait brings big fish is a popular one and I think I’ll go with that one today! Surface trolling and Kites for the Yellowfin are the working processes for the moment. Right not would be a good time to head out for Yellowfin Monsters as long as your expectations aren’t set a little high. You´ll come back with fish from these two hot spots, so what’s stopping you?

Marietta Islands are still and always are a great value for your fishing dollar. Just 28 miles out from Marina Vallarta are the Marietta Islands. These islands are Game Reserves and are protected. So you can´t just get too close unless you have a permit. But the fishing off the rocks is wonderful and will always produce amazing strong gamefish. Jack Crevalls, Bonito, Sailfish (90 lbs), Dorado (20-35 lbs), Rooster Fish and many others call this area home year round. This week we continue to see a wide variety of these fish here as is normal.

Inside the bay this week we’re seeing some welcome, but strange catches. Just the other day I had a couple head out in the bay for four hours and came in with a large Sailfish. So the way conditions are, anything is possible, just about anywhere right now. Large Bonito are all over the south end of the bay, with Roballo, Needle fish, smaller Dorado and Jack Crevalls as well. Makes a four hour trip well worth the effort….

Punta Mita and around the corner to Sayulita are always productive, but with the extra distance from Marina Vallarta, why make the trek. But those out of the la Cruz Marina are heading closer in with the Sails and Dorado on the islands and off the point being easy pickings for the time being.

I have included an extra picture this week of the 54th Annual Pez Vela Tournament that ended last week. The Tournament is always a local ´Happening¨ and is always fun to participate in. Watch for my program on www.PVYAFCA (dot) com and check it out!
Well, that’s enough for this week, until next time, don’t forget to kiss your fish….

Puerto Vallarta Fishing Report - Nov. 8 - 2009

Billfish Abundant at Corbeteña, Yellowfin Tuna Size Varies, Fishing is Great

November is here, the seasons are changing as we feel the coolness in the morning air. Noticeably, there is more action in Marina Vallarta with full restaurants, shops and offices. Yes the tourists are coming back as we head in to the Thanksgiving Holiday Season. Not only are the tourists returning, we’re already spotting the first whales in the area, a sure indication of changing seasons. One thing that has changed is the availability of Billfish at Corbeteña and El Banco.

That’s right, Sailfish and Marlin are abundant at Corbeteña and they’re hungry. Dorado in the 35 to 50 lb range, Cubera Snappers in the 45 lb range, even some Wahoo! The bite was later in the day last week, but with the changing Moon phase, we’re seeing the bite later in the morning and a little earlier in the afternoon. What this means, any time from 8:30 to about 3:00 in the afternoon the action has been picking up. Good information if you´re trying to keep your time on the water down. Be sure that if you see bait boils on the way out you stop and get some. For those inexpensive boats without Tuna Tubes or Tubes in good working condition you’re just hoping for luck to on your side with some bait in the area to catch. Now Google Eyes are always a necessity and easy to purchase. But Skip Jack Tuna or Bonito are another thing and are used for larger fish. With the availability of bait in question at the Rock, under equipped or cheap boats without the necessary basics will actually cost you a fishing trip if you don´t have at least some stunned bait.

El Banco was quiet for a long time, but we’re seeing Black Marlin in the area with some nice ones boated over 700 lbs this past week. Yellowfin Tuna are lingering in the area with a size range from anywhere between 60 to 200 lbs, it just depends on what is in the area at the time. Live bait is sparse here as well, so the same thing holds true here as well, make bait while you can. With the water temperatures more in line now with what is normal, El Banco can change in a heartbeat, so keep your ears open or feel free to fire me an email for the latest conditions. I won’t tell you a story to get you on a boat, I want your return business!

El Morro and the Marietta Islands are still alive with Dorado, Jack Crevalls, Bonito, and Sailfish. Trolling a Google eye around the rocks may even get you a Rooster fish, but they’ve been AWOL lately. This is an area where you can rely on fish all season or year long. Well worth the fuel dollar, but I suggest hitting Corbeteña since it’s only ten or so miles farther out than El Morro. The same goes for the Marietta Islands, being so close to each other they normally have the same conditions, but not always.

Punta Mita and the surrounding area have been kinda quiet. With most charters heading towards the Islands and Corbeteña, not much information is available as to what is happening there. The few reports I have gotten are showing Dorado and Sails are still in the area and the boats from La Cruz Marina have been taking short trips to the rocks or islands as the locals call them. Around the corner at Sayulita, there is a chance at some Rooster fish if you’re feeling lucky. Roosters have been strangely absent even here in the last couple of weeks. But they can show up at any moment, so stay tuned.

Inside the bay if you’re looking for some light action is well worth a four or even six hour day. Around the area of Los Arcos to Yelapa there have been many Skip Jack Tuna, Mackerals, Bonito, small Dorado, Needle fish and Snappers to name a few. Any fish in the bay may wind up on your line if you give it a shot. River mouths are alive with Snook at the moment as well, so give it a shot.

Remember when you’re looking through the web pages or talking to agents, cheap boats come with less skilled captains and crews. Your better, tried and true captains can actually demand some decent wages because they catch fish. Cheap boats get cheap crews, less experience, no insurance and ultimately can cost you the fish with their lack of skills and professionalism. Remember lower prices should come with lowered expectations. Stay away from any guy carrying a notebook telling you he has 12 boats, but can’t tell you the captains’ names. These guys are ¨pirates¨ and they´re operating illegally playing off your greed. If you want a cheap boat real bad, that’s exactly the way you´ll get it.

That’s if for this week, until next time, don’t forget to kiss your fish!

Crazy Currents, Changing Conditions is Challenging Puerto Vallarta Anglers

It’s been a rough year for Puerto Vallarta Fishing all around. In April CNN spoke lies about the conditions in Mexico concerning Drug Issues, Swine Flu and the general state of Mexico. It put the brakes on all tourist related businesses and has hurt Puerto Vallarta to the bone. Now that we´ve entered November we’re all looking forward to people returning to our fair city, no matter what that may be. One thing for sure, whatever it is, it will be better than what we’ve been seeing for the last six months.

But we’re into November now and tourism is returning, slowly but surely. Demand for Restaurants, Services, shops and yes Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta is on the upswing. Conditions have changed a little this week, but that’s to be expected as currents dictate the ¨flow¨ of things when it comes to fish. We’ve seen the deep water locations of Corbeteña and El Banco run hot and cold. Hot in the form of warm water and cold as in Yellowfin tuna. First, the conditions for the last week were not great. We had a storm south of PV and a cold front come down from California causing rolling seas and rough days beyond the bay. Having said that, Sailfish, Blue and Striped Marlin (350 lbs), Dorado (40 lbs) and Cubera Snapper (45 lbs – 60 lbs) are still hanging around the rock at Corbeteña. At El Banco, Dorado have been running in the 45 lb range, Sailfish are large also in the 80 to 100 inch range and can be anywhere from 80 lbs to 130, it just depends. Yellowfin have been in and out at both locations, but your chances of boating one of these beauties right now is greater on the down side. Thank god for the other species or we’d be hurting for fish.

Closer in to El Morro and the Marietta Islands what was so automatic last week is now a little more work. Sailfish, Jack Crevalls and Sailfish are still in the area. But it’s not like fishing in a barrel like last week. But using live bait, Google eyes or Skip Jack Tuna along with Petrileros lures of four to six inches will get you something to brag about as the blue plate special that evening! Haven’t seen any Rooster fish the last few days, but like always, things can change in a heartbeat.

In the bay the fishing has returned to normal from the unusual conditions of Dorado in every nook and corner of the bay. Again with the current changes we’ve seen less Dorado, but plenty of Snappers, Roballo, Bonito, Needle fish, Skip Jack Tuna, Snook and more. The point off Cabo Correntes is showing signs of nice sized Sailfish and rumors of Rooster fish. May be worth the time and trouble. The trash line is fading and soon will be a thing of the past as the seasonal rains come to an end. If you can catch the trash line, it’s a fish machine and make sure you stop by and cast a few diamond jigs at it on the clean water side. This will make a slow day take off with action.

Frenzied Dorado Invade Vallarta Fishing Grounds, Yellow Tuna at Corbeteña

We all know that this has been another El Nino year and because of this simple fact we continue to see changing water currents and fishing conditions. This past week we’ve seen all sorts of things at the Puerto Vallarta Fishing Grounds.

Let’s start with El Banco and Corbeteña. Both famous for producing Monster Yellowfin and Black Marlin have taken it on the chin this year. With Hurricanes and tropical storms dancing around Puerto Vallarta, it´s been hard to call what fish are out there and where they are. It would be easier to say where they aren’t. When it comes to these two areas things have been running hot and cold. Water temperatures have crept up to 87 degrees or higher which is not a YFTunas friend. So for a few days they both ventured off into more comfortable conditions. But this is not to say that there are no fish at El Banco or Corbeteña, quite the opposite. In fact if you´re at Corbeteña you´re seeing Yellowfin Tuna in the 60 to 80 lb range and they´re hungry. You can expect three to five of these babies in a ten hour trip. Same old way, trolling, Kites, live bait and petrileros for lures and you´ll have a day. Now if you’re interested in Dorado, aka Mahi Mahi, they’re running larger than average and anywhere from 25 to 60 lbs, they taste great. Black Marlin are here as well, but kinda sparse. Sailfish can be up to 130 lbs at both locations and of course there is always the Cubera Snapper waiting for you at the high spots at El Banco and the structure at Corbeteña. If you’re heading out this way, remember to bring a well equipped bag of tricks with you, that included a kite or you may come back wishing you had hit the tackle store before you went out.

Closer in, it’s been Dorado City. I don´t care where you are, they are. El Morro, the Marietta Islands and the point off Punta Mita have been taken over by Dorado. The numbers are so thick at the moment if you´re not dead set on Yellowfin or Marlin, why head out those extra fuel cost miles when you have Sailfish, Dorado, Jack Crevalls and a host of other fish to choose from here? Live bait is king of course with Google eyes being the best bet as of now. But don’t ignore the Chorras or bait sized Bonito or Skip Jacks. Frankly, everything is working for Dorado, the only thing missing is you amigos.

Inside the Bay has been magic. Now I don´t say that much as you know. We all know there is always fish in the Bay, but we also know they´re smaller by comparison when you look at the variety of fishing offered in Vallarta. But this week was different, I had clients head out to Yelapa and in the picture you can see the results. This was Cole Brook who caught this nice Mahi with Capt. Chema on the left and first mate Jimmy in the middle. So just four miles off Yelapa you can catch something that was close to a record for a 12 yr old angler! Sails are here as well, so what the heck, hit the afternoon bite and have some fresh fish for dinner. This sort of thing last a very short while, so get out there before things get back to normal!
