Summer Time Fishing Finally Returns, Marlin, Dorado, Yellowfin!
Where are we and how did we get here? Interesting question since I already know where I am, I just don´t know how we wound up Entering October before the fishing got to July Conditions. But I am not complaining, in fact I am relieved. El Nino for some reason seems to be backing down and we´ve returned to bait filled Fishing Grounds and perfect water Temperatures of late. For the moment it looks like ideal conditions may continue for some time to come.
At the outer, deep water fishing grounds of Corbeteña, we´re seeing daily action increasing. With seeing a greater numbers of fish and a greater variety of fish here this week. Black and Blue Marlin have been hanging around the Rock lately and that´s not all. Cubera Snapper for those willing to bend their mind set a little are running in the 45 to 65 lb range. Using the old wounded bait method, just toss one over the side, let it sink over the structure and hang on, there will be dinner on the table tonight. Sailfish have been in and out lately. Mostly in and mostly hungry. Yellowfin have been teasers lately. Many around and still in the 60 to 100 lb range. But the bait is plentiful and coming into a full moon Yellowfin Tuna are going to be a little picky here for a while. Not many Dorado this week, but with diminished charter numbers it´s hard to tell what is or isn´t out there sometimes. But we know for a fact that on any given day there are trophy fish available and waiting for you to present them bait that will tickle their fancy.
El Banco and Corbeteña will at times be like night and Day, at other times, be the same. This week things have been much the same at the two locations. More Black Marlin at El Banco has brought those looking for some larger Billfish action to this popular location. With plenty of bait off the high spots anything is possible here! Yellowfin have been more consistent here, but not exactly on tap if you know what I mean. Remembering fish are always bigger at El Banco, if you´re shooting for something that could possibly be a world record, it would probably happen at El Banco before anywhere else. Yellowfin the last couple of weeks have been across the board. Some large, some normal and some invisible. Invisible because you know they´re out there, just now where you can see them! Running down riggers and surface baits are still a good way to go, and kites are working also. So what does this mean? It means you better be equipped when you arrive or not having the correct colored lure, or bait or kite etc. could ruin your day. Fishing is not a cheap sport and if you head out without the right stuff….. Don´t be caught by being cheap, well equipped boats cost more than fuel for a day of fishing. Coming in on a cheap boat still feels like you got screwed, but coming in with fish, the cost is never an issue, remember this when looking for a charter boat up to snuff. Quality comes at a cost, of course.
For those looking to save money, on day fishing, will find El Morro and the Marietta Islands to be rockin! Sailfish have taken over the area and just a few days back we had the Judy Trafis group come back with a nice Sailfish for the photo. She and her group released another Sailfish, boated four Dorado (30 lbs) and other misc. fish. Eight hours and all those fish made this day well worth the price of a fast and equipped boat. As you can see from the picture, this was no slouch of a fish. Some Rooter fish at El Morro rocks and many Needle fish or as I was told, the poor man’s Marlin! This is one of those places when anything is possible. With a little strange luck, Blue Marlin has been known to visit this area on occasion. With plenty of bait fish in the area, it can be enticing!
With what appear to be fading El Nino Symptoms, we´ve seen a little more rain, which means there is a trash line in the bay once more, for now. The smaller game fish love to feed off the seeds, leaves, bugs and organic materials that go with this trash line. So in the bay fishing the last few days has improved greatly with Roosters, Small Dorado and several other hungry species waiting for a three inch diamond jig to wiz past them. It´s kinda like waving a new credit card at my ex-wife. Doesn´t matter what the deal is, she jumps at it and will figure things out later! Same with these fish, when they´re hungry, they´ll take a swipe at anything shinny and quick! Out near Cabo Corrientes or south towards Chimo, Skip Jack Tuna have been bringing in larger game fish. Now Some Sails are roaming the bay, but this is like getting
It looks like the back half of fishing high season will pick up and find more fish in the area for the visiting and local anglers alike. With the blue water and better water temps I expect the fishing to continue to improve. With the great prices being offered to tourist on flights and hotel rooms, we´ve already seen a slight increase in the number of charter boats heading out in the morning. Everyone in Marina Vallarta is optimistic about the upcoming tournaments with the fish returning daily improvements.
Now remember, you can always fire me an email and ask me anything that comes to mind about Mexico or Puerto Vallarta, doesn’t have to be about fishing, Restaurants, banking, medical stuff, even questions about how the water is clean and very drinkable in Puerto Vallarta are more than welcome. It´s about building community and not so much about promoting my business. I am well known, so I am truly interested in your well being and getting the straight truth to you without an agenda. Can’t say that about many in Puerto Vallarta, so don´t be afraid to ask, answers are free…… So are dumb looks… HAHAHAAAA
Below are three You Tube links talking about the Dorado being fished out in the Gulf of Mexico and throughout the world. Very interesting stuff that I AM SURE YOU AS FISHERMAN WOULD BE INTERESTED IN KNOWING. First you have to be informed, and then something can happen. Check it out, you´ll be glad you did!

Don’t Give Up on Yellowfin Tuna, the Season is Not Over Yet!
Normally Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta is a no brainer, especially at this time of the year. Normally we see Yellowfin Tuna in the 200 to 300 lb range at this time of the year, but this year is one of those special years called El Nino. Most people hear the name El Nino all the time, but in reality have no clue what it really means. Yes they know the weather is going to be a little weird and this is a normal thing. No global warming causing this, but it will get blamed for this. As the currents from the equator change and water temperatures all over the world fluctuate, this affects not only fishing, but weather patterns around the globe. Now this year we´re seeing the Yellowfin follow the currents way north to California and beyond. Four years ago, when we had the last El Nino, they were catching Sailfish off the state of Washington, I’m serious about that, made the national news it was so strange. I haven´t heard anything that strange as yet so far this year, but I am sure something like this will come out in the news.
Now you may be asking ¨How does this affect the fishing in Puerto Vallarta¨? Well, the biggest indication El Nino is here, is again the weather. One example how it affects the fishing here in PV is the water temperatures. Get used to this, I will be talking a length about this condition in the coming months. When water temperatures get over 88 degrees, the Yellowfin find this too warm. So they head out of the warm water, or go deep in areas where there is live bait. This is why a downrigger is so important. For the same reason you need a fish finder, and thermal layer indicator on your electronics. With this information, you can make sure you don’t lose your downrigger sinker and make sure you’re in a comfortable temperature for the species you’re trolling for. When the water temperatures are up, this is the only way you´ll find a Yellowfin Tuna, otherwise they’re like Elvis and have left the building!
Now the last couple of weeks, we´ve seen some drastic changes in the water temperatures. Last week I told you how they water at Corbeteña was like 82 degrees. I was called a liar by a few who live in Marina Vallarta, but everyone now knows this is the case. Most days you´ll find the water temps in the 82 to 86 degrees range. This is perfect for Sailfish, Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi and more. So it´s been a mystery why there haven’t been any Trophy fish to speak of in the deep water locations of El Banco and Corbeteña. I´ll tell you, it had me pulling my hair out trying to figure out what to tell customers. You don’t want to step on their dreams, but on the other hand you don’t want to build unrealistic expectations for clients either. They will just come back mad and never trust you again. While on the other hand, Pocco down the Malicon will tell people whatever they want to hear to sell a charter. Last week I had a guy come in the shop and quote a below operation cost price to me and said this guy told him he could boat Moby Dick in a six hour day. I told the guy the truth, just to find him going out the next day with my lying competition. You can guess the results. Getting back to the subject, it’s difficult at best right now to put a real positive face on the fishing scene in Vallarta right now.
Having said all that, this week we´re seeing another change for the better. This week we´ve seen some 300 lb Yellowfin Tuna boated at El Banco. For the most part the Yellowfin have been in the 100 pound range. Right now we´re real happy to have any Yellowfin at our World famous fishing grounds. But there are other species at The Bank as well. Black and Blue Marlin are and have been coming back into the area and this is a good sign indeed. Last week I mentioned that there were some flying fish here at El Banco. I was expecting this to draw in the Pelagic or billfish, but it didn´t. Now trolling live bait on the surface and running a down rigger will cover your bases and give you the best chance at a Gamefish you´re going to get. Sailfish and Mahi are here as well, so if you´ve been saving your pennies for fuel, now would be a good time to shake the piggy bank!
Corbeteña also has lots of bait in the water, just like last week. Only now there are fish in the area to grab their attention. Now I don’t want to make it sound like you’re fishing in a barrel, but you are fishing in one of the best locations in Mexico for fishing. Not every boat is coming in with fish, but every boat I sent out this week to El Banco and Corbeteña came back with fish. This sail fish with James Calvert is just one example this week of the better conditions. With blue water conditions and perfect sea conditions, those lucky anglers who are here in Vallarta right now will enjoy uncrowded fishing grounds like twenty years ago. Something you probably won’t see here ever again. Those not afraid of the crap they smear all over NBC News and CNN and come to SAFE Mexico will enjoy the trip of a lifetime, I guarantee it. For some reason the press has a stiffie for Mexico and will smear this country from afar for some agenda only they know of. But if you have any real questions about what is going on in every corner of Mexico, go to www.thetruthaboutMexico.com …. It´s all in English from people who have recently visited the country and in their own words spell out what the deal really is in Mexico. If swine flu or H1N1 is your concern, The States are more dangerous than Mexico ever was and the USA never closed the schools or other densely populated areas for ten days like Mexico. So don´t be afraid, be cautious and take all this doom and gloom with a grain of salt. If PV was infested or dangerous, I´d say it was….. Stay tuned.
If you’re looking for a shorter day, yet still want to catch some nice light tackle game fish, the bay is the best bang for your buck right now. El Morro and the Marietta Islands are alive with smaller game fish, but plentiful. Jack Crevalls, Rooster fish, Snappers, Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna and more are waiting for you to temp them with something. Even a lure, in fact, this past week, many times lures worked better than live bait. So you need to remember to run everything you´ve got in the lure bag as well as live bait. Vary the presentation with skirts off that goggle eyes nose of different colors, chum, and pray. None of it hurts and by trying something that you know won´t work, just may! This day is well worth the time and easier on the vacation wallet!
Inside the bay things have been the Luke warm conditions that have prevailed for the last month. With no rain, there is no Trash Line in the bay. The smaller game fish love to feed off the seeds, leaves, bugs and organic materials that go with this trash line. Although that is not to say there are no fish in the bay, which would be silly…. Out near Cabo Corrientes or south towards Chimo, Skip Jack Tuna have been bringing in larger game fish. Now Some Sails are roaming the bay, but this is like getting lightening to strike where you tell it to. Not likely, but who knows, maybe you´ve got the power amigo. Lots so snappers in the shallow areas with structure, Bonito, Skips, Needle fish, Mackerals, and the list goes on. If you’re looking for a short day with some action, this is what the doctor ordered!
It looks like the back half of fishing high season will pick up and find more fish in the area for the visiting and local anglers alike. With the blue water and better water temps I expect the fishing to continue to improve. With the great prices being offered to tourist, we´ve already seen a slight increase in the number of charter boats heading out in the morning. Yellowfin, Marlin and Sailfish everywhere, now if we could only get them to take the bait!
It has been another frustrating week when it comes to Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta. Your favorite Big Game fishing species are out there and in fair numbers. But the old story is getting bait in front of them that they´ll pay attention to. Even with the warm water temperatures at El Banco and Corbeteña, there have seen fish on the surface feeding. Trolling, casting, you name it, when they´re on the surface you´d expect to be able to grab their attention, but that has not been the case. Now I´d love to be able to tell you why this is happening, but fact is, I have no clue. One thing for sure is these fish are eating something. The question is what? We haven’t seen any Tuna Crabs, Squid or even Flying fish, so it could be Krill Shrimps or Squids. Checking fish stomachs are not giving us any clues, it looks like they´re eating chorra type fish and smaller live baits. So figuring this out is difficult at best amigos… stay tuned!
We have had some strange conditions all coming together and hopefully after the full moon phase moves on, we´ll see better fishing. Making bait in the mornings has been easy enough and you can boat Bonito and Skip Jacks all day. In fact those looking for these species in the bay will have a great time. Just remember to get your bait when you can. It may not be where you´re going and this could make all the difference in your day on the water. Even a zombied out bait fish is better than no bait fish amigos!
It´s hard to come up with a definitive report on what is happing when it comes to fishing in Puerto Vallarta due to the lack of boats going out. There is no local consensus where the fish are. Nobody going out means no news. Fishing these days ¨means you´re putting a stake in the ground and going with a decision¨ so to speak. Heading out to a fishing spot you think will be productive based on what you think will ¨happen¨ based on the present conditions ¨you know of¨. Of course you can always change your plans once you´re in the area you want to be in, but it´s nice to know what has been happening.
Corbeteña and El Banco have Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna. If you can get their attention they´ve been all running fair sized. Marlin in the 350 lb and up range, Tuna anywhere from 60 to 150 lbs with the occasional 200 pounder. Sailfish have been decent in the 80 to 95 inch range. Dorado are all over the place size wise and at all the locations. It´s a matter of what you come across. Using a Kite will help your Yellowfin Chances and now that we´re entering a full moon phase, remember to get to the fishing grounds early, before sun-up or at sun-down. But the in between hours for Yellowfin will not be productive at all. With the extreme tides and other weird conditions, things should change in the next week. But for now, a shorter trip closer in to shore would be a better bang for your buck.
El Morro and the Marietta Islands have been fairly consistent with Sailfish, Mahi, Skip Jack Tuna, Bonito, Snappers, Needle, Jack Crevalls and more. These fish are hitting surface baits cast and trolled. But it seems the bite is more in the middle of the day with these fish and it might only last an hour. Keep your eyes peeled for diving birds, this is when you know you can boat some fish, but these windows are only open for a short while. It´s a right place at the right time situation right now. Smaller live baits like Goggle eyes or lures are working, but make sure you´ve got the right color combination. Ask around before you head out, the colors are changing daily. Pink tiger print would be a good color to try. And of course the Trash line will help improve your chances at boating game fish. Fishing is ¨Like a box of chocolates¨….. You take what you get!
Many boats have come in this week from the outer fishing grounds to in the bay or close to the bay spots tapping into the Rooster fish and Mahi in the Sayulita to Litibu areas of the bay. Diamond jigs and rapallas in the reef and structure areas are working nicely. Frankly several boats have come in from the deeper water locations to bank on the availability of fish closer in. Now if you paid for a ten hour trip, then this area would be a consolation area so clients can at least boat something. If that is the case, check the daily reports and if the fish being caught are closer in, then why spend the money for the deeper locations. Except the charter companies are looking to make money on you. It can be hard to get the truth from a guy who will tell you anything to get you on a boat. Everyone needs to feed the family right now…..
This past week we saw the Ujena Bikini Jam / Bisbees tournament for the second time in as many years. I have to say it was a disappointment at best. There were only two boats in the tournament. Sponsors were upset and even the events planned were shoddy at best. Now if you´re looking for girls or models in bikinis, there were no shortage of photographers in the area with plenty of models. But fishing and models in bikinis don´t really mix in my book. For four hundred dollars you could have had two models, a photographer and yourself in the tournament. Most married guys don´t want a sexy babe in a bikini on a boat with them for obvious reasons. So that part of the tournament was never even close to successful and actually I think it hurts the tournament entries when the wives find out about this ¨feature¨ of the tournament. I don´t think we´ll see a Ujena Tournament next year. It is even more likely that Bisbees will not have their name associated with this group again in the near future. So if you´re thinking of participating in this tournament next year, there are better choices out there, that actually pay prize money. I forgot to mention that the entry fee did not include winning any cash, just a trophy and pictures…..
We were hoping to have the ¨Hurricane bite¨ after Jemena passed by, but no luck. Cabo got hit with rain and fish! Yellowfin are enjoying the cooler water temperatures there this year and the swift current brings these warm water fish even further north. Soon we´ll be hearing of how they´re catching Sailfish off Seattle again. So anything is possible this year. If you´re in the Southern Calif. Area, you should expect to see the Albacore in around fifty miles and not the eighty to hundred miles out like normal, that is if you´re lucky! Keep an eye on Catalina, this area could be producing Marlin any day. Just my past experience speaking here and well worth thinking about if you live in the area.
Next week as the tide situation changes and the full moon phase transitions into a better time of the month, we should see an improvement in the conditions and number of fish being brought back in. But that’s looking into my Crystal Ball, which I dropped some time ago and is cracked. So my prediction may be a little flawed on the optimistic side. But the fish are out there and with work you can get hook-ups. Just be patient and be grateful for whatever you hook into. You will always be in fish, but in Puerto Vallarta Fishing grounds, we have a tendency to have ¨Monster¨ expectations. This of course can breed disappointment, so be realistic and you´ll have a great day on the water!
Because people are looking for deals, yet still want to hit the better fishing grounds, we at Master Baiter´s ® have started a Shared Boat Fishing Party for $250.00 usd per person. You´ll head out to Corbeteña with a well equipped boat and a ¨real¨ shot at boating that finned fantasy you came to Mexico for. You can contact me for more information at CatchFish@MasterBaiters.com.mx You can also be my Facebook Friend at: MasterBaitersPV@gmail.com and see my Fish Pic of the day. I also have a blog that is linked so if you´re interested in the daily happenings around Marina Vallarta and the fishing scene, connect with me and you´ll be informed and armed when it comes time to go fishing! It’s real time information and those in the area of Marina Vallarta will find it useful. I also post weather conditions like Hurricanes etc. I am doing everything you can do including Twitter (MasterBaiters) and I also have a new fishing program where I do a show called Vallarta Fishing Experience (http://www.banderasnews.com/sfproductions/vallarta-fishing-experience.htm). We promote the Puerto Vallarta Yacht and Fishing Charter Association (PVYAFCA) in an effort to direct people to boats of better quality. Let’s face it, I couldn’t take all the business available in PV, so I´ll do what I can to promote the reputable ones. This is a free association, so you can´t pay to get into this association. So check out these areas and give it your best shot. Like I´ve said earlier, things change faster than we like. With the signs of better tide conditions and more bait in the water, this should make things better in the next coming week. Especially at El Banco and Corbeteña!
Well, that’s about it for this week, until next time, don´t forget to kiss your fish!
We Still Guarantee Your Catch or 30% of your money back. We are the only company I KNOW OF that does this anywhere! Only on specific company boats (company boats only in Marina Vallarta Store on the boardwalk). If you ask, we are also giving free hour fishing with every charter (except 12 hr charters) and a free T-shirt to who ever catches the biggest fish! That’s about a $125.00 usd value. Take advantage of this insider offer for reading my articles.
