Weekly Puerto Vallarta Sportfishing Report, Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna on Track!
Puerto Vallarta, the town itself seems to be breathing a little easier these days. Mexican Nationals have taken over PV, filling the hotels, restaurants and shops now. Mexico is no longer at the forefront of the influenza pandemic and those enticed by cheap airfare / hotel packages are the lucky ones. The Americans are still not down in force, but High Season for Fishing is here amigos. Soon that Angler who´s been sitting in his living room watching ESPN, fantasizing about Black Marlin will be able to afford a sports vacation for less dinero than in a bunch of years!
The conditions are always fluctuating here in the Tropical Regions of Central America. This year the rainy season hasn´t been all that ¨Rainy¨. With what rains the mountains have seen naturally filter their way into the bay. This means finding blue water is the secret here, but not always easy to find. This is when the ever present trash line is a welcome sight. A band of sediment pushed in front of the murky brown water. Here Dorado can be caught inside the clear water side. Rooster Fish will also take small baits. Diamond jigs work well, whatever you have in your bag of tricks has a chance.
The last few days if you were fishing in the Buceras area, like Capt. Armando of El Duende, you could have came in with a nice 100 inch Sailfish like the one pictured. This was done in four hour trip and frankly this was a big surprise. This is Sharon Pagoria and 1st Mate Pancho before it was to be prepped for a skin mount. Remember, you can always mount your fish at Master Baiters…. Sounds like a new Tshirt…..
If you ventured out a little farther than Buceras, The point at Punta Mita with the buoys and abundant live bait is a reliable location that will produce positive results in a shortened day. Less fuel expense so those fuel challenged individuals are heading this direction, returning with full fish boxes. Roosters around the reefs in front of Sayulita as well. We´ve been seeing smaller Roosters in the 25 lb range and Mahi in the 30 to 50 lb range which will put a smile on your face. Secret here, shinny…. That´s it!
If you´re heading out to the El Morro or Marietta Islands, remember these are protected game reserves and you can´t get too close. But you can still fish outside of these areas and those are always fertile when the water temperatures rise. Roosters, Sailfish, Jack Crevalls about 35 lbs, Needle fish or Mexican Barracuda I call them, Bonito, Snapper, anything is possible on any given day. With all the natural bait that just hangs around the islands a nice eight hour day makes this all possible.
If you have fuel to burn, heading out to Corbeteña is a crap shoot. If the water is blue and clear, there are Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish, Marlin, Cubera Snapper, Wahoo and whatever else shows up for the day. It all depends on conditions and the rigs you´re running as to which species you´ll come back with. Open your mind and let the Guru Captain lead the way amigos!
El Banco, Same thing, twenty miles away. Some days the high spots here will be just thriving with baits, others that are all you´re come in with! The water temperatures play such an important factor in the ¨where abouts¨ of these fish. With the strong possibility of currents being miles out from El Banco, it may be a situation where you may need to head out and look for them. If this happens a good setting of 310 north, more often than not will get you into something, but you can´t be 100% sure! The water here has been a struggle with cold and dirty conditions moving in and out randomly. Yet if you can find some clear and warm spots, Black Marlin in the 500 lb range and Yellowfin Tuna in the 60 to 200 lb range are hungry if you can find them. Kits are always a great option and if you don´t have one on your boat, they´re not expensive and not high tech. But you do have to keep an eye on them. But they work and will work when nothing else will! Eighty bucks to about fifty dollars will get you one that will work and last. Money well spent.
As a whole the fishing grounds are still pretty vacant of Anglers. You can have these locations to yourself in these extra ordinary conditions for a fraction of what it cost last year, in some of the world name places you thought you would probably never be able to afford. The Marriott Casa Magna is one of the best hotels in Marina Vallarta. The Westin is the 5th highest rated hotel in Mexico and has a famous architect / Designer where his work is nicely shown off. Rooms that would be going for $300.00 a night right now are in the $70.00 usd range per night. Heck a motel six cost me more than that ten years ago! So if you´re considering a summer vacation consider PV, You´ll never see it like this again!
We Still Guarantee Your Catch or 30% of your money back. We are the only company I KNOW OF that does this anywhere! Only on specific company boats (company boats only in Marina Vallarta Store on the boardwalk). If you ask, we are also giving free hour fishing with every charter (except 12 hr charters) and a free T-shirt to who ever catches the biggest fish! That’s about a $125.00 usd value. July Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta Right on Track, Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna!
Now that we´re moving into late July, the weather services have informed the general public that we are either in or entering another El Nino Year. The effects of this normal weather condition can be mild to severe and will affect the weather of the whole world, not just the Americas. If you would like to be better informed on the subject you can visit the NOAA Site at: http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/tao/elnino/el-nino-story.html
Moving on we´ve seen water Temperatures hover in the cooler ranges of normal lately and may continue, who knows. The interesting news is the water temperatures in the fishing grounds closer in to shore are the productive areas to be. This means that if you´re heading out, hitting the farther out areas like Corbeteña or El Banco would be your ¨ ¨biggest bang¨ for your Fuel Dollar this week. But, like always this can change in a second so keep your ears open or call me for the latest conditions in and around the bay. With all the Tuna, Marlin and Sailfish sighted at these locations they will come around sooner than later. Mahi in these spots have been larger than expected in the 50 lb range, but they are usually out from the Rock or High Spots, so you´ll have to use your head and your lucky rabbit’s foot!
El Morro and the Marietta’s are still ¨on again, off again¨ when this article was written. Still lots of bait in the area making it hard to get any of them interest in the baits being presented. But again, this can not last forever and as the bait thins out, the tables will tilt in the other direction. Rooster fish, Mahi Mahi and or course Needle fish and Jack Crevalls will keep your interest!
Yet again this week, the story is all about inside the bay. The relatively warm water temperatures are keeping bait and larger species in close to the short line. If you´re outside the bay, you have a fair chance of hooking into a Marlin or Sailfish. Most likely you´ll be getting hits from Dorado and Rooster fish at the point of Punta Mita in the large rocks or as the locals call them, islands. For those interested in getting game fish and not spending the day searching for Moby Dick, then this would probably be your best option. Six to eight hour trips are where the fish are at, so why throw your money away.
Last week the Navy was inspecting charter boats and tour boats alike for proof of insurance. If the boat you were on did not have it, then you had an argument on the boat. Not with the Navy, the captain has that problem. No rather with the clients who wanted their money back and it turned into a Giant Argument. That is one way these charter boats sell cheap trips. There are other ways out there that you´d never know, but always be sure you are on safe boats with insurance. On these boats you may think you´re paying for safe, so ask for their proof of insurance. If they can´t produce it ¨soon¨ don´t be stupid. Once they start cutting corners, there is no end to it…..
One area that is ignored is the south end of the bay. For some reason there is very little interest in the Marina Vallarta Captains in this area. But the area around El Faro at the Cabo Correntes point is a hot spot that should be receiving more attention. Sailfish in this area is not unusual and there are times when Black Marlin have been boated there as well. The area is on the Bay Fringe so this can be a mixed bag on any given day. Snappers, Mahi, Skip Jack Tuna, Mackerals, and the list goes on….. Worth a try if you have your own boat or an adventurous captain with some ¨information¨…..
The rains are still a blessing here in PV, so if it´s raining in the morning, this is a good thing amigo. Fish get excited and come to the surface, exactly what we would like. With all the logs and dead head stumps etc, there are lots of spots with opportunity if you know what to look for. Casting a goggle eye live bait around a stump or log in the bay can pay golden dividends in the form of Mahi Mahi for the evening dinner table!
As we get ready to move into August, the Yellowfin Tuna and Black Marlin will continue to become more and more plentiful. With El Nino becoming an issue that has to be dealt with the season could be interesting at the very least. We´ll keep our fingers crossed, you do the same…..

Mahi Mania in La Bahia, The Great Bait Invasion!
Well, this week it was announced that El Nino is showing it´s ugly face again and we all know what that means. More upside down fishing, warm to hot water temperatures and unpredictable conditions. Nothing new, right? I don´t know if this is good news or bad news for fishing in Puerto Vallarta. One thing for sure, the fish are out at the fishing grounds now!
This week we´ve seen overly abundant bait in the water, mostly flying fish, they´re a bit of a problem really! Too much bait can be a problem since you can´t offer anything to these fish they could be interested in. So the only thing you´ll be able to do is your best to mimic them. So lures are a strong weapon to have in your bag of tricks. Silver and purple are good color combinations to try if trolling fast, skipping the lure or bait on the surface of the water might do the trick, worth a try. Make sure you have a down rigger with you. Warm water temperatures will drive Yellowfin down to water temperatures that are more comfortable to them. The bait situation has been like this for more than a week now so they should start thinning out. Soon the professionals will be writing this all up in the November fishing publications.
Corbeteña and El Banco have been disappointing this week when it comes to Yellowfin. For a few days at El Banco, it was a Yellowfin Tuna Ghost Town. Jigging, kites, trolling, nothing there to strike! Now Sailfish are all over the place. There is a shot at boating a Sailfish, but you´ll have to work for it amigos. There have been some really large Dorado outside of these locations, so if you´ve got the fuel, keep your eyes peeled for boils. Lots of Marlin sightings, no takers though.
The Marietta Islands and just north of Punta Mita have been showing signs of life with midsized Mahi Mahi in the 25 to 40 lb range. Sailfish are taking bait in these areas, so this could be an indication of abundant food diminishing. This should only get better as the week progresses, cross your fingers.
The bay lately has been surprising productive. Snappers in the beach areas with rocks, Dorado at the trash lines, with Snook at the river mouths and Jack Crevalls springing up again, the bay has a fair amount of bang for your buck. Four hour days in the bay are affordable and productive. I´m running an extra hour with every charter short of 12 hrs. So you pay for four, get five. How can you beat that if your want a short day and lots of fish!
The bottom line this week is the usual places are still pretty scarce when it comes to boats. You can still essentially have the fishing grounds to yourself and again, this is not a condition that will last for long. If you can, I would suggest getting out there and enjoying uncrowned conditions.
The last few weeks I´ve been writing about how many, many fishing boats that book charters are not insured nor have legal operating papers. Well this past week the Navy clamped down and started checking individual boats for their documentation. If you did not have it, you were turned around and given a citation. Several boats have been stopped from doing business and the bargain hunting angler who put down his money was hard pressed to get a refund. This does freak the Anglers out to have a navy boat come up to you and start asking for papers. Especially since they have guns and look pretty darn intimidating. But this is for the good of us all and will only keep things safe for the vacationing enthusiast. Many people who come to Puerto Vallarta may have one chance in their lifetime to catch a finned fantasy. Saving a few dollars with a friend of a friends, friend can ultimately kill that fantasy before you get out of the marina. Be sure you are using someone who is looking out for your interest, not just theirs….. We would call that customer service, or just getting what you paid for!
I post my articles online at my web site: www.MasterBaiters.com.mx so you can go back and review past reports and get a feel for a specific time of the year or just what has been happening for the last few weeks. I am also going to get some content strong weather sites up on my web page so there is no guessing what conditions are in Puerto Vallarta Sportfishing areas.
If you would like to get on my real time weekly mailing list for fishing reports and other interesting information, just send me a message at CatchFish@MasterBaiters.com.mx and I´ll get you the offered specials and discounts that will come along with you as a valued customer. Nothing to lose and everything to gain! I also have a Facebook page now where friends and clients can get the inside info on Master Baiter´s ™. Yellowfin Tuna Season Officially Begins in Puerto Vallarta!
Below normal levels or tourism are continuing into the traditional summer season when we see families with children in school come to our little corner of paradise. A result of this is the fishing grounds are almost deserted. With Yellowfin Tuna, Black Marlin and of course Sailfish in the area you may never see uncrowned fishing conditions like this again in your lifetime. Hotel prices have dropped like a rock, airfares are reasonable and there is no problem with availability when it comes to boats!
Every year in June, we see the migration of Black Marlin back into our world famous fishing grounds. Come late June we start seeing football sized Yellowfin Tuna that by the end of July will usually be in the neighborhood of 100 lbs. Right now the Yellowfin Tuna ¨footballs¨ as they´re called, are traveling with the ¨Spinner¨ Dolphin, which are sprinkled all over the place in blue water locations. These Yellowfin Tuna footballs are running from 30 to 90 lbs. Large for Spinner Dolphin to run with. If you come across a field of jumping Dolphin like this, you better get your game on amigo. Multiple hookups are the case here. Of course this is good news since we all know that when we see this, it means the Monsters are coming soon! So I guess you could say I am a little Encouraged.
Magnifico with Capt. Alonso on our 32 ft. Bertram this week was one such boat that ran into these large football Tuna. Using Google Eyes and casting in the middle of the ¨herd¨ was a no brainer. Cast and Catch was the order of the day. Soon our clients were saying ¨Uncle¨ so we called it a day. Remember even if the Yellowfin are 90 lbs, this is bait for Marlin and other Yellowfin Tuna that are naturally larger. This in turn draws in the larger fish and the cycle begins!
Corbeteña and El Banco have seen an invasion of Flying fish. This of course brings in larger fish which of course gorge themselves on these delicacies! Too much bait can be a problem for the hopeful angler. Lures that mimic flying fish could do the tricks which are trolled a little faster than normal could produce results. But keep this to yourself….
Lots of Sails at Corbeteña, but as they´re lounging on the surface digesting these flying fish, they aren´t taking baits. I would suggest an early day and be there before sun up, you may have a chance of boating a Sail before he gorges himself! Marlins have also been spotted at Corbeteña, but only one boat got a Black Marlin this week. Again, too much bait can drive you nutz, especially when you can see the fish on the surface and couldn´t care less as you hit them in the head with bait! Yellowfin Tuna has been kinda scarce at Corbeteña. But those using kites will find the effort well rewarded. Trolling Google eyes or Chorras has been less than productive this week.
Same condition for El Banco or The Bank in Spanish. I call this area a Marlin McDonalds. Fifty miles out, the high spots can be up to 59 ft and the low or deep areas at 600 plus feet. So bait fish love the shallow areas and the game fish appreciate the ¨fast food´. Being so close to the continental shelf, this is truly fast food for Marlin and Tuna alike.
Punta Mita is heavy with action when it comes to Mahi Mahi and Rooster fish. The Islands have been producing these species with consistency for several weeks and there is no reason to think things will change. Roosters in the 40 lb range are common place. Mahi can run between twenty to forty five pounds. For an 8 hr day you can have these and others waiting for your bait. Great option for those who don´t want to spend ¨sun up to sun down¨ on a boat.
Inside the bay Mahi Mahi have taken over! Small to large, they are taking baits aggressively. You could have fifty hookups, but the sizes have been all over the place. Again, Flying fish are everywhere so you may have to be patient. If you are in an area where the fish are there, but not taking the bait, here is a little trick for you to try. Using the wash down hose, sprinkle the water like it is raining. Then cast a google eye in the middle. The fish will think it´s bait returning to the water after jumping to escape being eaten. This can work on days when nothing else will!
Capt. Oscar is still on Discovery, our 32 ft 2006 Luhrs express and I truly believe he is one of the best kept secrets in Puerto Vallarta. Born and raised in Puerto Vallarta, Capt. Oscar has been fishing these waters all his life and he´s like an Indian scout on TV that finds the bad guys for John Wayne! He can look at the water and just know where to go! If you are interested in not only entering a tournament, but want to win it, Capt. Oscar is your man! After years of working with Capt. Oscar I find it easy to guarantee his day on the water with you! Remember, that´s money out of my pocket if you don´t come in with fish amigo! I´ll be posting up profiles of all my captains and crews soon so you can actually know who and what you get when you´re fishing with us at Master Baiters ( www.MasterBaiters.com.mx).
Remember, when searching for a charter company, it´s always best to go with established professionals with an office. Check out sites like www.mexfish.com, www.Saltwatermag.com, or the World Wide Fishing Guide (http://www.worldwidefishing.com) no matter where you plan on fishing in Mexico! You will find reputable companies who are established and filtered so you don´t run scammers with web sites claiming to be ¨all that and a bag of potato chips¨. You´ll find us on these sites as well!
