Seasonal Rains Have Begun, Fishing Improves Gradually!

Well, it´s hot and humid in Puerto Vallarta. Right now the days are a cool 85 degrees with a 84% humidity factor that makes it feel warmer. Now if you´re from Florida or Houston or even New Orleans, then this is on par for summer conditions. But if you´re from California, Arizona or the North West, you may just think you’re a poached egg! It´s taken me years to get used to these conditions, so now I look forward to these hot days and sweltering nights. Especially when you know Yellowfin Tuna and Black Marlin love these conditions.

The hotels have reopened in Marina Vallarta and it looks like we may have turned the corner where tourism is coming back little by little. This naturally is good news for the local business owners who for the last three months saw no business coming off a disappointing high season with the economic woes of the states and the rest of the world. Now with cheap air fares and hotels running some incredible specials, Mexico, PV in particular, is dirt cheap and waiting for you along with our world class fishing. So if you´re an angler dreaming of Billfish and Tuna, then this would be a great time to set up a trip before the strong dollars slips back to reality! FYI, if you are planning on coming down anytime this year, remember you don´t have to be in Mexico to get pesos at a great rate! You can purchase them through American banks at the national rate, not the commission rate you´ll pay here in PV… something to remember amigos!

If you were here in Puerto Vallarta Fishing this past week you´d be one of the lucky few enjoying wide open fishing grounds without the fish being chased down from too many boats in the area. At our resident Marlin Mc Donalds,  commonly known as El Banco, is still producing Black Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna ranging some days from 40 lbs to other when they´re around 100 lbs! Mahi Mahi are also in the area and ranging from 35 to 55 or so pounds. If you can´t get a strike in the high spots areas, head north and ten miles or so out on a heading of 320 you could remedy that problem. Remember, fish move, you have to be willing to do the same amigos!

Corbeteña is still alive and being its versatile self. Sails, Marlin and of course Yellowfin Tuna as well. Same size as what is happening at El Banco. Some days Corbeteña is better than El Banco, so keep an ear out for a recent report as to where to go. Your fuel dollar depends on it!

For the last weeks the area off Punta Mita islands there have been very large Pargo (aka Dog Tooth Snapper, Cubera Snapper, Dog Snapper) in the 75 lb range and this is rare amigo. Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Rooster Fish as well are around the islands and has been a very reliable location for non-risk takers.

Inside the bay the fishing has improved considerably. With the trash lines forming in the bay due to the rains, the small game fish are once again invading the usual places. Snappers, Mahi Mahi, Mackerals, Jack Crevalls, Bonito, you name it. For the fly fishing enthusiast, this is what the doctor ordered.

For those interested in going fishing, Master Baiter’s is giving everyone who charters our company guaranteed boats at this time (company boats only in Marina Vallarta) a free hour fishing with every charter (except 12 hr charters). We are also throwing in a free T-shirt to who ever catches the biggest fish! That’s about a $125.00 usd value. Take advantage of this limited time offer.

That’s about it for now, until next week, don’t forget to kiss your fish!

I don´t care if you call it Deep Sea Fishing, Big Game Fishing or Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta, the game is on amigos. This past week we´ve finally seen the Black Marlin moving back into the area. Like I´ve been talking about for the last couple of weeks, they usually come in about this time of the year. Now they´re not huge, running 300 to 500 lbs on average. But they´re still large fish and they´re thick at Corbeteña and El Banco. Live Bait is king and it can be scarce at the fishing grounds so make sure you load up as soon as possible and don´t wait and hope you can make bait once you´re there. Don´t make that mistake amigos….

It looks like we´ve made the turn into summer with water temperatures climbing to the 84 degree mark which is like heaven for Yellowfin Tuna and Black Marlin. Speaking of Yellowfin Tuna, at El Banco the Yellowfin this week were running in the 60 lb range and were plentiful. Just a few weeks ago 10 miles out past El Banco the Yellowfin were in the 200 lb range, but that´s how it goes. We´re right on time with this size tuna and they´ll be increasing in size shortly, so be patient. Mahi Mahi have been large out there as well with may being brought in the last week in the 45 lb range.

Corbeteña is picking up as well. With the Snappers, Amberjacks and Rainbow runners for bottom fishing. Then with Black Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish and occasional Wahoo, Corbeteña is in my opinion the most flexible fishing grounds we have in PV. Blue water, Sunny days and calm seas make this time of the year perfect for the vacationing angler looking for a world class ¨finned fantasy¨ to become a reality.

At the point of Punta Mita north the fishing has been automatic. Rooster fish are still large and in charge near the inward reefs. Mahi Mahi are running in broad size ranges here, they can be anywhere from 10 pounds to 30 lbs. Sailfish have been lounging on the surface like they do..

This week inside the bay the smaller Mahi Mahi have started to invade the usual locations. Master Baiter´s clients hooked into 40 small to large Mahi in the bay just the other day. Bonito, Mackerals, Snappers, Jack Crevalls and more make the bay worth fishing again. Take advantage of our additional hour tacked on to your basic trip and extend that day for free. It’s a good way to stretch your fishing dollar.

I did a radio interview with Snag from Hoofish radio in San Diego http://www.fishfaceradio.com/studiocam.html the other day and I have to say I like the show. Informative and fun his show is on Saturdays at 12:00 p.m. Puerto Vallarta time (10:00 a.m. in Southern California). They were interested in the normal stuff about fishing, but they also wanted to clear up any fears people may have about influenza and Mexico. Hopefully there were some freshly informed people that will now be mentally able to visit Puerto Vallarta. It still amazes me how some of the best fishing grounds in the world can still be so mysterious even after all the fishing articles PV has written about it each year!

Summer Big Game Fishing Coming on Strong

Many times I hear people say to me, ¨What was it like fishing in PV before it was so widely known about?¨ My answer to anyone who ever had the same thought is this: If you were out there on the water now, you would have all of the fishing grounds to yourself. Right now if there are three boats at El Banco or Corbeteña daily I´d be surprised. With the season coming on nicely, you can experience fishing in Puerto Vallarta like it was twenty years ago. So if you are serious about your fishing, this is the time to be here! Big game fish are moving into the area daily and if the idea of being alone out there and saving money doesn´t excite you, then you´re not a fisherman!

This week El Banco was the top location to visit this week. Yellowfin Tuna, Striped and Blue Marlin, Dorado of size are still there. Now that we´re out of the full moon phase of the month, the Yellowfin will return to taking baits. Speaking of bait, the Sardinas or where I came from, Sardines are thick everywhere in and out of the bay. This can play havoc for the expecting angler. Bait brings fish into the area, but it also make is it hard to get their attention when you´re running the same bait they´ve been gorging on. Casting baits like this in the middle of a live boil will always work. But trolling can be iffy on days where there are boils everywhere. This is when a kite can save the day. So the well equipped boat will almost always come in with fish.

Corbeteña like El Banco has been seeing Yellowfin in the 60 to 80 lb range, Trophy sized Sailfish, and some decent sized Striped Marlin. The one nice thing about Corbeteña is the different underwater conditions that exist there. You have the rock of course which juts up from a deep trough. On the southern end of the Rock is structure, volcanic structure that houses Cubera Snapper. Now there are also Rainbow runners and Amber Jacks hanging out here at this time of year also. So if you´re looking for a versatile area and don´t mind the thought of not catching a Monster Yellowfin Tuna, then this is the place for you.

Points at and north of Punta Mita have been where most boats from the past weeks have been heading to. Dorado, Rooster fish at Sayulita and Sailfish are making this an affordable day trip with fish guaranteed! If you head out with us for a limited time, we´ll throw in a free T-shirt and an extra hour on the water. Making you able to reach the more expensive fishing grounds for the same money… something to think about.

In Bandaras Bay the news is pretty much the same. Small game fish like Mackerals, Snapper, Bonito, Skip Jack Tunas, Snook and small Dorado are in the usual places. But as the rainy season starts, the leaves, seeds and organic stuff that pours into the bay come summer, the Rooster Fish and Dorado love this. Keep an eye out for trash lines where this organic stuff makes a line where the water is dirty on one side (trash line), clean on the other. This makes for a great light tackle day. Make sure you´re using heavier test line than 25 lbs amigo, even small fish fight like you can´t imagine.

For those of you interested in a Saturday morning talk show focusing on salt water fishing out of San Diego, then I suggest you give Rick Willis on Face Radio. Rick Willis keeps things fun and informative. His show is on Saturdays at 12:00 p.m. Puerto Vallarta time (10:00 a.m. in Southern California). This is the internet address so you can hear it anywhere (http://www.fishfaceradio.com/studiocam.html). He has some archived shows you can listen to from recent weeks gone by and they´re well worth a listen if you have a few minutes to spare and maybe learn something you never knew before.

For those interested in going fishing, Master Baiter’s is giving everyone who charters our company guaranteed boats at this time (company boats only in Marina Vallarta) a free hour fishing with every charter (except 12 hr charters). Big Game Fishing Returns to Puerto Vallarta

For the last several months we´ve been in something like a holding pattern, waiting for the water temperatures and Big Game Fishing to return to our world famous fishing grounds. If you were using Yellowfin Tuna as your calendar this year, you´d think it was summer if you here. This could be an early season tease, but with all the out of season Yellowfin Tuna at the Tres Maria Islands for the last few months, I´m a little inclined to call this an indicator. Presently just 11 miles north of the high spots, Yellowfin Tuna were boated just the other day weighing in at 180 lbs. This is June folks, early for Yellowfin of this size. Marlin, Sailfish, and Rainbow runners are still around the high spots. In a time where your fuel dollar is precious, now would be a good time to shake the piggy bank.

Corbeteña hasn´t been left out of the action when it comes to Yellowfin Tuna, although they´ve been running between 40 to 75 lbs. But this could change any minute and explode or die, that´s fishing. One nice thing about Corbeteña is the area is diverse in underwater conditions. This means with the volcanic structure there and deep channels, Snapper, Rainbow runners, Amber Jacks and more are available to the open minded angler. Sailfish, Marlin, Mahi Mahi and Jack Crevalls are waiting for you now.

Off the point of Punta Mita, Rooster fish are setting up house around the point before Sayulita. This is a normal hang out for these fish and we´ll be talking more about this as the season goes on. Mahi Mahi at the buoys have been running larger, between 25 and 40 lbs. Sailfish are moving in like ants twenty miles north of the point. So if you want a shorter day, the fishing is still going to paste a smile on your face.

Unless you were specifically looking for Yellowfin Tuna last year, Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta last year was excellent, but the Yellowfin never really showed up in the numbers we´re used to seeing. With unusually large Yellowfin outside of the bank this early in the season combined with what has been happening at the Tres Maria Prison Islands, I think that this season will be made to order for the serious Yellowfin Hunter! Fewer visitors, means fewer charter boats at the fishing grounds. Instead of chashing fish down, this will help keep fish on the surface where baits are more easily seen due to less noise and congestion. The Fishing has improved drastically now and if you want to know what it used to be like at the PV fishing grounds, now would be a chance to experience this first hand! There are some crazy cheap deals out there for PV, take advantage of the lull and Catch a finned fantasy for your own.

For those interested in going fishing, Master Baiter’s is giving everyone who charters a boat at this time (company boats only in Marina Vallarta) free hour fishing with every charter (except 12 hr charters). We are also throwing in a free T-shirt to who ever catches the biggest fish! That’s about a $125.00 usd value. So there you go, what’s stopping you now?

That’s about it for now, until next week, don’t forget to kiss your fish!
