Good News / Bad News For Yellowfin Tuna Hunters!
The pace has definitely slowed down in Marina Vallarta. Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta in general is in the “slow” time of the year. By that we mean the tourist and vacationing angles have for the most part all gone home until the end of May. This is nothing new and we’ve learned to roll with the seasonal tourism changes. But this doesn’t mean the fish went anywhere! They’re still out there, but you’ll have to work for your catch these days, especially if you’re looking for large Yellowfin tuna.
That’s right, I said Yellowfin Tuna. That’s the good news. The bad news is they’re at the Outer Islands or Tres Marias, which are eighty miles out from Puerto Vallarta. That’s eighty miles out of Marina Vallarta, but again, they’re out there and taking bait like “nobodies business”. Live bait, lures, it doesn’t matter. For Yellowfin Tuna to be in the area and in the size range they’ve been running, this is highly unusual. Normally the Yellowfin Season starts as the water temperatures head up towards 84 degrees in early June. We’ve also seen several species of peligics (Billfish) like Blue, Black and Striped Marlin up north for the whole winter. The water temps have stayed fairly consistent up north around the Tres Marias for some time now. There has been a lot of speculation why it’s like this, but for now, it’s “smokin” out there!
Trips last week to Corbetena and El Banco for the most part was “Iffy” at best. One day its off, the next it’s on. Some days there’s boils everywhere, others, you would have been better off heading north of Punta Mita or just heading out to the Marietta Islands.
Speaking of the Marietta Islands, we’re still seeing heavy Rooster Fish action and they’re all larger than what we’re used to seeing. Many are running in the 35 to 60 lb range with many that are larger. Torros, Jack Crevalls, Bonito, Snappers and others are there as well. Definitely worth a 8 hr day on the water.
The rocks or islands off Punta Mita have been showing strong action on Mahi Mahi (aka Dorado), but the size is varying from small to large. Again, it just depends on what the day brings. Live bait is working well, so load up on Gogle eyes (live bait) on the way out from the bait vendor at the fuel docks. They can run a buck to five bucks a bait, but it’s still easier than making bait for yourself in the morning!
The bay is still happening with Skip Jack Tuna, Bonita, Sierra Mackerals, Snappers, Jack Crevalls to name a few. So when you’re ready for a short time or money. Cool mornings and mid day breezes make this a great choice for a short fishing trip. Especially if you’ve got kids or you’d like to do some fishing, but don’t want to spend the entire day on the water.
With the increase lately in the number of start-up fishing charter companies in Puerto Vallarta, there are deals to be had. It seems that everyone wants to live the Jimmy Buffett lifestyle and live in Margarita Ville. But be careful, the company you went fishing with last year may have the same company name, but they may not the same company. If you want to head out to the fishing grounds at 25 mph per hour, not 8mph, then listen to your inner voice when making charter company choices. Also, protect yourself. Don’t give a deposit to some guy telling you he can save you money while you’re walking down the boardwalk. If they don’t have an office with a door, don’t deal with them. I think the easiest thing I can say to you is this, don’t do anything you wouldn’t do at home. It’s just that easy and remember, you get what you pay for and many times not even that.
With the seasons changing, the water temperatures will soon be changing and the Summer High Season for Fishing will be upon us soon. Make your reservations early. Not because of availability, there is always a boat in Puerto Vallarta for you. The better companies will book early. Go to mexfish.com to read reports and to choose reputable fishing companies from around the world. World wide fishing guide is another site to check out. Where as we hope you’ll choose Master Baiter’s Sportfishing and Tackle®, you’ll find the companies worth their salt there. You see, we all pay to publish on these world renound sites and if you’re looking for a charter company, this would be good places to start.

Fishing in Puerto Vallarta, Seasons and Conditions in Transition.
Everything is changing in Puerto Vallarta, not just the clocks. With longer days and fewer vacationers in Puerto Vallarta, fishing has all but come to a stand still. After Easter, as usual, things slow way down and the number of charters heading out to the fishing grounds drop off dramatically. Notice how I neglect to mention the fishing is bad, because it isn’t! While that statement may seem to contradict itself, it’s actually a great time to be on the water. With fewer boats heading out, it means that you won’t have an army of charter boats all hitting the same “hot” areas. As long as you’re not expecting Moby Dick, you can always have great day fishing in Puerto Vallarta!
Let’s start out at El Banco, this usually reliable location has just cooled off, both in water temperatures and in strikes. There are still fish here, make no mistake, but it’s not going to come cheap or easy amigos! Last week the fish were hitting just five miles off the high spots, but this week if you wanted anything of any size you were once again heading out to the Tres Maria Islands, more commonly known as the prison Islands. Yellowfin Tuna ranging from 60 to 175 lbs are here and available. Mahi Mahi and Marlin are also in the area, but you better keep an eye on what you’re doing and where you are! I got a report today from a friend that told me his wife was sailing with some friends too close to the island and the next thing they new there were military types in camouflage and waving weapons. The boat was forced to dock at the island and the whole thing was a nasty mess. All came out well in the end, but don’t be stupid and think you’re going to get away with this. The few that have been catching fish in this area are very, very lucky they didn’t have an incident like this….. So be smart and don’t get your butt in a ringer because you think you’re super man.
Again, with few charters heading out, there really isn’t anything to report about the Rock or Corbetena as it’s more commonly known as. One thing to remember about this area, if you open your mind and try some bottom fishing, you’ll get Cubera or Dog Tooth Pargo (Snapper). Amber Jacks and Rainbow runners are also here for the taking if you catch it right. You can also look a touch south of the rock for Tuna and Marlin. Remember, fish move and locking yourself into a location mind-set will just reduce your chances of getting that trophy you’re looking for. Should have more news by next week, stay tuned….
El Morro and the Marietta Islands, in the safe zone, is still the place to be. Rooster fish in larger than normal sizes have taken over these areas and they’re taking baits. An average 8 hr. day on the water to this area will on average produce at least four Rooster fish in the range of 50 inches in length or around 50 lbs. This week they’re hitting live bait and jigs. So get your bag of tricks out, you may need them. One thing that has been working is using planers with lures or live bait to get them under the surface of the water has been slaying them at will. Some days color isn’t an issue, others it is. But the squid lures have been working well with this.
For Punta Mita fishing (the islands off the point), this area has been the place to be if you’re looking for Mahi Mahi. They’ve been running in the 30 to 45 lb or larger range as late. They’re taking baits and they’re plentiful at the moment. North of the point has been a little dead. Not many charters going up that way since the vacationing angler is looking for short duration trips resulting in something they can put on the grill! This area is worth the fuel expense and who knows, you may come in with a full fish box!
For the most part, fishing in the bay has been consistent. Skip Jack Tuna, Sierra Mackerals, Jack Crevalls, Snappers, small Grouper, Robalo and many other species to choose from. These fish will be on the smaller side, but plentiful. Great day for small kids or those looking for some action but short of time or money.
Last week I announced my new web page was up, but the email was having problems. Rooster City at the Islands!
Puerto Vallarta is still in the middle of Peak Season, evident from all the Mexican Nationals that come to our emerald coast every year about this time. Along with Semana Santa, as it’s called here, comes changes in currents and seasons as you might expect. We’re still in the winter fishing mode, but there are signs of warming conditions as the days are longer and the fishing will soon start warming up.
When it comes to Sport Fishing in Puerto Vallarta, anyone who’s been around a short while knows that we go through a period of time every year when every day is a challenge when it comes to fishing. Some days the fish are practically jumping into the boat. Others, it’s as if they’re playing with your mind. Nothing is worse than putting clients on fish, and the fish couldn’t be less interested in the baits being offered. Welcome to the seasonal transition period. Currents changing direction, days with up welled up sediment making for dirty water conditions, then there are days you could cast your key chain at them and you could boat a real trophy… go figure.
Starting at the outside edges of our world famous Puerto Vallarta fishing grounds, El Banco is still alive with action, but with the tourist in town, most people are opting for shorter trips. Those hitting this outside location are finding Yellowfin Tuna in the 60 lb range (great for this time of the year), Blue and Striped Marlin and of Mahi Mahi. You may need a five or six mile radius from the high spots. Two weeks ago if you wanted to see these species you were being chased away from the Tres Marias (aka Prison Islands). There are those who will risk everything for a fish and we all feel sorry for them when there’s a “problem”. But you can’t protect people from themselves.
Very, very few boats heading out to Corbetena for the last few weeks. With other areas closer in, it’s a better bang for the budget conscience anglers buck. Last I heard of Corbetena the Long Liners had surrounded the rock. The sports fisherman on charter boats risk wrapping the props up in these lines, which I’m sure you could imagine what an issue that would be. Remember, there is no coast guard here to save your butt. So keep this in mind.
The Marietta Islands and El Morro areas are the real story this week. Rooster fish, Jack Crevalls, Torros, Snappers and other assorted species have been saving the day for the local boys. Again with the vacation budgets being a little smaller this year, these areas are perfect. Eight hour trips will put you in the thick of things. But remember, they may not like what you have to offer. The boats that spend the extra time and fuel looking for fish will always come in with fish. If you’re using a company that hits one spot and that’s all you’re going to see, don’t go fishing with them again and warn your friends about them. Beware of “bargain charters”… there is nothing cheap about fishing, so keep your wits about you amigos and come back happy.
The buoys at Sayulita are still Mahi Mahi central. Remember the buoys are owned by the commercial fisherman and they may get a little upset at you if you you’re there. In fact it’s pretty common for these guys to run over your lines. The Mahi are still running anywhere from small to nice sized, it just depends on what you come across. Farther north of this area you’ll still see sailfish and blue marlin, but it’s a ten to twelve hour day. If you’re going to put in the distance, El Banco is a better choice for the time being.
The Rocks just off the point of Punta Mita have been a heaven for Rooster fish and I don’t mean small ones either. I’ve had clients for the last few weeks coming in with surprisingly large Roosters in the 40 to 60 inch range. If you’ve never had the chance to boat one of these beauties, they’re amazing strong for their size and you’ll think you’ve got a much bigger fish on than what it turns out to be!
This week I’m proud to announce I’ve just updated my web page and I think you’ll find it impressive. Go to www.MasterBaiters.com.mx to check it out. I’ll be posting more and more videos. We still have the fishing reports that are real time on Mondays, still photos and tons of other useful information. I have luxury yachts and party boats available now as well! Soon I’ll have a facebook site, so check us out! Things are changing as Master Baiter’s ® grows with Puerto Vallarta.
I guess that’s about it for this week, until next time, don’t forget to kiss your fish!

Changing Seasons and Better Reasons
Well folks, the seasons are changing here in our world famous fishing grounds in Puerto Vallarta. We’re in the middle of our yearly transition where we see the currents change direction and begin again moving from a southern to a northern direction as we move into summer. For the last couple of weeks this has been the conditions for the vacationing angler interested in Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta. The good news is things are changing and for the better I might add.
The available baits of small Squid, Shrimps and Sardines have thinned out and the available species are finally taking baits. Which means I get to write a report that doesn’t sound like a cookie cutter report from previous weeks. So lets get to it.
For weeks now if you were looking for Yellowfin Tuna, Marlin or large Mahi Mahi, you needed to be twenty miles or so north of El Banco. But this week, this has changed for the better. This week the water has been clear and blue, plenty of Yellowfin in the 40 to 175 pound range, depending on what you come across. Water temperatures that just a week ago were chilly in several areas have warmed up to a more pleasant condition for all the species in the area. So if you’re looking for Big Game fishing in Puerto Vallarta, then it may be worth it to you to head out before the temperatures start raising to uncomfortable levels. If you’ve been itching to hit El Banco, then now would be a good time.
Off the rocks at the point of Punta Mita and at the Marietta Islands, the Rooter fish have been available her for weeks. They’ve been Hot then Cold when it came to the daily bite. Some days you could come in with seven large Roosters, other days you could hit them in the head with a Google Eye and nothing, not a flinch. But now if you’re casting live bait or running white poppers in these areas you could come back with a trophy sized Rooster fish like Doug Tuffley and his friends. Doug mounted this 52 inch beauty pictured. Lots of Jack Crevalls, Torros and Bonita in the area as well, so these spots are just what the doctor ordered when it comes to an affordable fishing trip!
It seems like the long liners have taken over Corbetena. It’s not legal for these “fisherman”, if that’s what you call them to be in this area, but there you are. I would suggest everyone get a bamboo pole, duct tape a Macheti with a sharp edge to it to the bow of the boat. As you troll around the “Line” you won’t have to worry about wrapping your prop in it that way.
If you’re north of Punta Mita off San Pancho you’ve got a strong shot at Sail fish here. But not many folks heading this way with the action at the point and the islands. The buoys have been producing some nice sized Dorado a.k.a. Mahi Mahi averaging in the 35 lb range. But like always, some days are better than others, that’s why they call it fishing amigos!
I’m happy to announce the just finished, new web page of ours: www.MasterBaiters.com.mx is finished and has lots of new features on it like videos, photos posted regularly of clients and their catches. An open fishing forum for the local waters as an alternative to other boards that may be fairly famous but is more like a abuse page if you post articles. Plus the other features that you’ve come to love. My weekly fishing reports will be posted real time, so you won’t be getting dated information and I won’t have a word limit like I have with the papers and magazines. It’s impressive if I do say so myself…. .
I guess that’s about it for this week, until next time, don’t forget to kiss your fish!
